We all have a wealth of experience. We all want to keep learning. The Richmond Hill Computer Technology Volunteers ("RH-CTV") defines itself as a community of people with an interest in computers and a desire to learn from each other. We run our programs out of the City’s M.L. McConaghy Centre. We invite individuals with different levels of technology experience to join our group and share their knowledge with the community.
We maintain a computer Training Room, present an Information/Assistance Session on the on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, and provide instructors for the City's Adult 55+ computer courses . Additional information is found in the "Programs" section of this website.
To teach wise and life-skilled generations of older adults that a computer can be a tool for the realization of their own personal goals—not just “another piece of technology”—and teach them to be comfortable and confident in using one. The foundation of our learning journey begins with turning the computer on.
The RH-CTV was originally named the McConaghy Computer Club and was founded by Jurij Nowickyj with John Bly as Assistant in 1999. Computer sessions were held in a basement room at the M.L. McConaghy Centre using two donated machines: one PC and one Mac.
In 2001, a computer lab is set up on the 2nd floor and equipment moved up from the basement and eight computers are configured in 2002.
An Internet connection and a network printer are installed in 2003 with free Forums beginning on the first and third Saturdays of each month. There are demonstrations, a question and answer session, and opportunities for 15 minute hands-on sessions with instructors. Wireless networking is added in 2006.
In 2009, the City's Parks and Recreation Department obtain a contribution from Chartwell for the purchase of six new Windows Vista-capable computers and eight LCD monitors. Microsoft graciously donated Vista and Office software for use on the new hardware.
Currently the computers run both Windows 7 and 10 with software such as Microsoft Office, to support the training courses provided.
In May of 2019, the City of Richmond Hill was awarded a New Horizons Community Based Project Grant for seniors to learn about computers. This included the purchasing of 7 laptop computers, 6 iPads and 5 Android tablets to assist with free workshops, especially for those who would like to test-drive a device that our seniors do not own. The laptops will eventually be replacing the aging desktop computers at the McConaghy Centre and the tablets will be available for future iPad and Android tablet courses. The New Horizons program leveraged off a 2018 survey to 55+ members, which highlighted the importance of: Brain Games, Socialization & Interaction, Photo Management, and simply staying up to date with the rapid changes in technology. All these mobile devices will be capable of providing future workshops and programs among all the Richmond Hill community centres. This New Horizons grant also allowed the RH-CTVs to demonstrate a laptop/iPad/Android tablet during the 1st & 3rd Saturday Information Sessions and Assistance Sessions.
The COVID-19 Pandemic in March 2020 closed all community centres, and the RH-CTVs proactively requested that the City of Richmond Hill purchase a licensed copy of Zoom Meeting. This allowed RH-CTVs to continue our 1st & 3rd Saturday sessions virtually, to accommodate the many who became even more isolated. We also introduced a weekly Wednesday Drop-In session from 2-3 pm (session has been discontinued), so that attendees could join and ask technology questions.
