RESEARCH FOOTBALL CLUB
The End of the Story
NOTE by Paul ...
The newspaper clippings and general comments below are one possible way of covering the events leading to the winding up of the Club. But, further down the page and in red font, there is a suggestion for a different way to describe the 'End of the Story' on this website.
The club began to have some encounters with the Tribunal from 1989. A newspaper cutting below records an early case
The 'booklet' below shows some records, through newspaper reports, of the details of a number of situations during 1990 when Research players or officials were required to attend a string of Tribunal meetings.
The news article announcing the season-long suspension of the Club by the Tribunal is on page 5. The following two pages (6 & 7) may require enlargement on you screen due to the size of the scanned news articles.
Following the Tribunal decision, the DVFL called a meeting of all clubs and determined that Research Senior Football Club should be expelled from the League and there was a limit placed on each club as to the number of ex-Research players they could sign up in the following year.
But the memories live on with the regular gatherings of past players, particularly the premiership reunions which have been held in 2023, 2024 & 2025. Hopefully these and other like it will continue.
COMMENTS ABOUT an ALTERNATIVE WAY to COVER the END ...
The newspaper clippings, included above as the means of describing the gradual winding up of the Research Seniors Football Club, may not be the best way to present those final months of the Club's history. The news items present only part of what was a complex story which continued for a couple of years.
If left as is, there will be quite a few people who think that the picture presented doesn't fully or accurately represent the way developments unfolded over that time.
The newspaper articles were written at the time the events played out, but they don't represent the full picture. And any attempt now to clarify information would be fraught with arguments as to who said what and when, and so on. It might be best to leave those discussions to personal conversations at reunions and other gatherings, rather than including them as part of a public document which this website is.
The alternative to presenting (1) something that highlights half of the story OR (2) something that attempts to explain all sides of the story, would be to provide a fairly short statement along the lines that the Seniors Football Club was wound up at the end of 1991 after the Club was suspended by the DVFL for 12 months.
