Asking to write a bio has been an amusing if not daunting experience. My career following Georgetown has been both diverse and adventurous. It’s not a “blow by blow” but does highlight the things I enjoyed the most and where I had the most successes.
I started out in a very envious position as an “assistant” to the assistant buyer with JC Penney in their corporate offices. As I came aboard the department was scheduled to have a buyer change but this was delayed which resulted in promoting me to assistant and the assistant to buyer. He was a fellow Hoya, some 3 years my senior and also single, giving us both a lot of mobility. JC Penney was just entering into the catalogue business and we both found ourselves in virgin territory having to put together both the store and catalogue plans for the coming season. Many a night we ended up sleeping in the office lounge and sponge bathing in the men’s room. The results were worth it…our store collection came in 22% over the previous year and our catalogue pages netted 2nd overall against all other departments ………I probably would still be at Penney today if it had not been for the complete change in responsibilities under the “new” buyer…he basically was a micro-managing one man show. I was relegated to clerical work….
Time for a change. I believed I was better suited to Sales over Buying and joined a top fashion house on 7th Avenue,,,David Crystal. Their IZOD/LaCoste division was right up my alley. I ran the showroom, with responsibility for selling and merchandising to many major accounts such as Macy’s and Neiman Marcus. It also gave me the opportunity to work with most of the pro golfer we “sponsored” such as Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. While the work was very enjoyable the compensation was a bit light, not enough for a “family” man..(hint !)
It was about this time I met my future wife and was offered a position in her father’s company. This always presents THE problem. ….the inevitable impression that you got the position because you married “the bosses daughter”…(which I did! )…My fears were unjustified. I developed a very close relationship with both the corporate members and sales force. As an “Account Executive” I structured 3 major merchandising concepts that put me in good stead with everyone. This time in my career was the by far the most enlightening from all concepts. I learned more about marketing, merchandising and sales than I had in all the previous years. Understand, this company packaged and sold for retail, Talon Zippers. One seldom talked about product…it was always “ dollar return per foot”,” turn over” and “number of consumer transactions”. Our accounts were shown how we out performed all other departments in their stores. All went well for nealy 10 years when fashions suddenly changed to more fitted garments, more difficult for the home sewers to make. Women were also joining the work force in large numbers and as AVON found out ..”ding dong..sorry, no one’s home”….Corporate giant Textron came to the rescue..buying up Talon but the writing on the wall was obvious for the retail end…
At this point I came to the conclusion that the best employer is yourself !! I set up an office and a small rep group to cover the mid Atlantic states and New England. …I was fortunate in having a few contacts in the “California Life Style” industry and took on produces from Gotcha, Raisins (junior swim) and Quiksilver. I was finally in my element….Here I was in an industry that was both lucative AND fun.
Been at it 100% up to 2 years ago when I underwent some serious back surgery and realized it was time…..Sold the business to my reps and retired to all those wonderful things you’ve been dying to give more time to.
Am now on the Board of the St. Andrew’ Society and full time secretary/treasurer of a 200 year organization called the Atlantic Indians (but that’s another story !). Also continue as an Honorary Usher of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, heavily involved with the Friendly Son’s of St. Patrick and am spending a lot more time with my children and grandchildren…hurray !!
Through all this I continue to wear my kilts whenever I have the opportunity..which i s often. But please note …I have never gone COMMANDO ! In deference to tradition and with much respect to those that do….I just couldn’t handle the itchiness of wool against all those sensitive parts…..
So, there you have it ..Happy Trails..and,
Never Row,
Donald
