Domain 3: Diversity of Learners

Addressing Students Diversity

Domain three is all about the different kinds of learners. Learners categorize their skills, interests, experiences, and needs by gender. Learners with disabilities are classified according to their interests, giftedness, and talents, as well as their language, socioeconomic status, religious background, and cultural background. This domain is about students' understanding that each person is unique and knowing how different they are from each other. In this area, a teacher's most important jobs are to respond to the different needs of their students, keep the classroom focused on learning, and use different assessment tools to improve their teaching.

Teaching diverse students is very challenging for teachers because you need to address the needs, experiences, interests, religious background, gender, and learners with disabilities like giftedness in your class. During my teaching internship, I experienced the needs of my students who were having difficulty with the Filipino subject, especially in composing sentences using the Filipino language. I encouraged my students every day to try their best. Creating a diverse classroom while maintaining a good learning atmosphere is both a problem and an opportunity. It isn't easy because they begin thinking about how to help the kids establish a sense of belonging before considering the lesson. As for my experience at Visca Foundation Elementary School, I encouraged my students to give examples related to my topic so that they can think outside the box. As their teacher, I know they are having difficulty constructing sentences in the Filipino language. I correct their sentences by checking them, and I also help them when they need help, especially in translating English words into Tagalog. As a teacher, it is really hard to handle students who are good at speaking English but poor at speaking Tagalog because it takes time in order to learn more. In order to provide relevant and developmentally appropriate education, teachers must consider the needs and skills of students from all backgrounds. They must examine a variety of factors in order to appropriately engage students in classroom learning. In Visca Foundation Elementary School, the student diversity I experienced is only the learners' needs. I also experienced giving examples to my class. I don't give examples that only focus on one gender. I always emphasized that whatever a boy can do, girls can also do. To address my students' strengths, I used their strengths as the basis for learning and understanding the lesson. I will also use their strengths as the basis for every discussion I have with them to help them learn. in their Interest, when I was able to teach my students every day, I could see that they were interested. They were interested every time I did an energizer and a game that was related to my lesson. Their Experiences, I'll ask my students to talk about their own experiences that are related to our topic as examples. their Linguistic, in our Filipino language class, I try to get my students to speak Tagalog. I tell them to ask questions or share their ideas in Tagalog so they can practice. This is a Filipino class, not an English class, so I want them to use Tagalog. It also helps them improve their ability to talk to each other in Filipino. When it comes to Cultural, I had a topic in my social studies related to culture. I ask them what are the culture or the practices in Baybay celebrating a fiesta. Also, in Socio-economic, all of my students are of the same status. In my social studies subject, we had a topic about rights. I tell them that they are lucky enough because they have parents who can support them and can provide for their needs. Every child has a right to have an education. I emphasize to my students that not all families are the same. And every child has the right to have shelter and enough food to eat. I’ll remind my students that if they see some child on the street, they should offer food to them.

So, from the things I've done during my internship, I've learned that being an equal-opportunity teacher can help students feel more comfortable taking part in class. As a teacher, you need to pay attention to how your students learn so that they can learn. Not every student is the same; some learn best through sight, touch, sound, etc. It's important to make sure that every student's needs are met, especially mine, since I'm their teacher. I forget to address some of my students' learning styles since I only use PowerPoint presentations for visual learners. But the most important thing to realize in this area is that your students need to learn about themselves so they can feel safer and more comfortable. It helps students talk to each other and with other people with more confidence.
