Based on current regulations, our district will open Tuesday, Sept 8 in the hybrid model.
Updated August 14, 2020
Our District Remote Learning Plan is written with the understanding and belief that it is very possible if not imminent that our district will move to virtual learning at some point during the 2020-21 school year, but we must recognize there are differences between our hybrid model and a fully remote plan.
Who will be learning remotely?
In the hybrid model we will have remote learners at all grade levels, but most students will receive at least some if not all learning in-person. Our hybrid plan has grade pk-5 students attending school daily and grade 6-12 students learning remotely every other day, but there will also be students who based on medical documentation will be working from home remotely for their or their household member’s safety. We anticipate we will have 150 students (25% of our population) in grades pk-12 learning remotely each day.
In our hybrid model, our youngest students, ELL students, and our students with disabilities will have the opportunity to attend school in-person each day. Furthermore, as the plan is implemented we will work directly with families and students who may be struggling in the remote environment. Parents/students are encouraged to contact the district to express their difficulties should they arise.
In the virtual model all students in grades pk-12 will be learning remotely.
Devices/Platforms:
All students pk-12 will receive a district owned internet capable device (Pk-5 iPad; 6-12 Chromebook). Students in grades Pk-4 will utilize SeeSaw and Zoom while students in grades 5-12 will utilize Google Classroom and Google Meets.
Internet Access:
Access to the internet is imperative in any remote learning environment. The District will work closely with each family who does not have internet access to ensure equity and availability of learning opportunities.
In the hybrid model, students when in-person will be able to connect to our district wireless and download assignments and lessons through their respective platform and will be able to upload completed assignments to their teacher. Students without access at home will also be given the opportunity to come to school during the hours when class is not in session (8-10 am for 6-12 students) to utilize the district’s wireless system.
In the fully remote model, families will also have the opportunity to come to school to utilize the district wireless either by coming to school during hours (if allowed), connecting to the wireless in our parking lot to upload and download assignments, local community organizations have offered public access to their wireless systems in various areas of our district (i.e. fire stations, churches, business, etc.). If none of these methods work, the District will work with families to provide internet connectivity via MiFi/WiFi options.
Any student or family needing assistance with technology should call the Technology Office at 315-658-2241 x331 or email: helpdesk@lafargevillecsd.org
Asynchronous and Synchronous Learning Opportunities:
Synchronous Learning is where students learn at the same time by activities such as attending a live lecture or viewing a live laboratory experiment.
A requirement of our Remote Learning Plan is for all remote learners to have Synchronous Learning any day they are not receiving in-person instruction. Teachers will utilize Zoom or Google Classroom to allow students to connect to their classroom from other locations allowing the student to view the teacher and presentation board only (no other students will be on video). Students learning remotely will be able to watch and listen to the lesson then will either have an opportunity during the lesson or during scheduled office hours to ask questions and interact with the teacher.
All students will be required to attend their lessons remotely when they are not receiving in-person instruction as follows:
PK-3 Students - Daily lessons in

Asynchronous Learning is where students learn the same material at different times and locations. For example, watching a lesson that has been recorded by the teacher at a time that is feasible for the student.
In order to achieve social distancing, cohorting, and student course selection at grades 10-12 in our hybrid plan, many of the elective courses will be offered in an asynchronous learning model. When in person, students will have scheduled opportunities to work on their asynchronous courses, but will be expected to complete assignments and view lessons on any remote learning day to complete their work and be successful in the course.
Office hours will be scheduled by teachers of asynchronous courses for students to ask questions, get help, and speak to their teachers live.
Remote Learning Grading
Student engagement and participation is expected. Our instructional staff will be tracking student engagement and participation while providing feedback, acknowledging strengths, making suggestions for growth and assessing student progress and learning. Instructional staff will be communicating this information to the students and families.
Traditional grading methods will be utilized and several factors will be taken into consideration including, but not limited to language, diverse learning needs, learning styles, home living situation, access to technology and family support. With that said, this is not last spring and virtual learners/families are responsible for communicating hardships to District administration and learners are responsible for completing their work. Students who do not complete work when in remote learning will be retained or will fail the course as they would not have completed the necessary work for the course. Again, any hardships with technology should be communicated to the district so we can work together to alleviate the hardship.
