After choosing the watch agenda, various phone and watch interfaces were created as well as numerous watch designs. These were then presented and discussed with the co-designer in workshop 4 where he could mention what he likes, dislikes, would change or would combine. The goal of this workshop was to better understand and implement the expectations of the co-designer into the product and interfaces so that it could best suit his wishes. During the workshop, there was an emphasis on the discussion of details and small features that made a certain design better than another.
Six different watch interfaces were created ranging from very simple to quite complex. This gave the participant a chance to pick and choose aspects he liked from the different interfaces. The most simple interface only shows a countdown to his next appointment and gives off a sound and vibration that indicate it is time to leave for the appointment. On the other end of the spectrum, the complex interface behaves like a typical smartwatch but is made more clear for him. It can see his appointment of course but also shows the time, has an alarm, can make phone calls, can see the weather, etc.
For the watch design, various straps and clasping mechanisms were given as options to the co-designer as well as three watch concepts that varied in curves, proportions, and overall feeling. The first concept was more of a sports watch, the second was simple and straightforward being mostly screen and the last was a sleek, apple-like watch.
Lastly, three different interfaces for the new phone agenda application were made. The first takes the default apple agenda app and removes multiple things including, having different agendas, receiving incoming agendas, receiving invites, having to set an alarm, and inputting a URL and attachments. It also adds an option to choose methods of transport and automatically calculates travel time. Another interface has similar features but changes the apple design to an even simpler one with easier interactions, and it includes a confirmation page. The final interface presents the first upcoming activity first. It also shows a clear distribution of preparation time, travelling time and appointment time for each appointment.
During workshop 4 the final interfaces and watch design were chosen. A combination of aspects from the six watch interfaces was favoured. The participant wanted a very simple interface with its main function of only reminding him of his appointment, he did not even care about the time or a countdown timer. These however were considered to be implemented as secondary, less obvious functions as they do have their use.
For the watch design, the participant wanted a soft dark brown leather band with a pin buckle closing mechanism. He also chose the sports watch looking design, however, requested some dimension changes. This design is clean but also looks robust.
Finally, for the phone application, the first interface that resembled his current agenda app was chosen as it is closest to what he is used to and is most functional for him.
This led to the design of the final prototype after tweaking his suggestions.
