Decades ago, the term megaproject referred to extremely rare feats of engineering. But as technology evolved, so did engineering and construction techniques. Today, while megaprojects aren’t exactly common, engineers and developers have successfully completed more than people ever imagined.
On that note, Reddy Kancharla shares with readers some characteristics of megaprojects.
Cost and c0nstruction duration
Megaprojects cost at least a few billion dollars, and more often than not, take 10 years or more to be completed. From the planning to its construction and eventual completion, megaprojects live up to their billing. All the preparations needed before these projects are used by the public would add even more time before operations start.
Investors
Megaprojects always have more than a few stakeholders, which is entirely understandable. These are huge and complex endeavors that need the support of both public and private sectors. Furthermore, because of the many phases megaprojects go through, they’ll need people who are well-connected to pull off the entire plan.
Goal
The main goal of megaprojects is to make life better for humanity, Reddy Kancharla explains. Most, if not all, the megaprojects ever built has this quality. From transportation to living spaces to research facilities, all these feats of engineering exist for the benefit of people.
Reddy Kancharla has more than 25 years of experience in projects involving civil construction, geotechnical consultation, and construction QA/QC, including 10 years of senior management experience. For more updates, head over to this blog.
