Reddy Kancharla says that everything you see built on the ground has utilized the expertise of a geotechnical engineer. A geotechnical engineer is there to ensure the stability of structures. In addition, they make sure everything built can take on external forces.
Today, Reddy Kancharla reviews geotechnical engineering and the role of a geotechnical engineer.
The process of building a structure is not as straightforward as simply drawing up blueprints and starting construction. Before any work can begin, geotechnical engineers must conduct thorough investigations to assess the ground and environment. It is incredibly important to ensure that the structure is built on a strong and stable foundation, something that cannot be achieved without an understanding of the area and its geological makeup. In fact, these investigations must be conducted before the structure is even designed to ensure that the plans are feasible and safe.
There are several aspects to evaluating geotechnical properties. The aspects include the exploration of both the surface and the subsurface. Water content and soil properties are also measured and analyzed, explains Reddy Kancharla. The investigation can involve a simple physical observation of the site. It can also include a battery of tests. These tests include penetration tests and soil sampling. Examples of more in-depth tests are Atterberg limit tests, water content measurement, grain size analysis, and more.
Secondly, geotechnical engineers also do foundation design. The design of the foundation, its depth, and its type depend on the planned structure and several ground properties. For example, geotechnical engineers take into consideration the bearing capacity. The ground can fully support the loads and weight of the structure or buildings. They also look at settlement. Settlement refers to the tendency of the soil to move downward due to the vertical strain the structure imposes on the ground.
Lastly, Reddy Kancharla says that geotechnical engineers look at ground movement. Ground movement pertains to the movement underneath the structure caused by climatic changes, a shift in temperature, slope instability, and others.
Do you have any examples of structures in your area wherein the work of geotechnical engineers is evident?
