If you’ve seen those houses made out of eco bricks or plastic bottles stuffed with smaller pieces of plastic, then you might have an idea when it comes to green construction materials. With the planet drowning in waste items like plastic, glass, and discarded electronics, using these waste products as part of construction materials helps ease the planet’s burden. According to engineering expert Reddy Kancharla, not only are we reducing our waste, the items we produce are also just as safe as regular construction material. Here are some examples of construction materials made from recycled waste products.
Plasphalt
Asphalt is often used to create or fix roads. However, its main ingredient includes a semi-solid form of petroleum. Since Asphalt is an aggregate of products, some folks tried adding grains of plastic to replace the sand and gravel that’s usually used when producing asphalt. Plasphalt roads are less vulnerable to wear and tear despite any road condition.
Nappy roofing
Sanitary waste is one of the most difficult type of waste to treat and recycle. But what once protected people from leaks can be recycled to serve a similar purpose. After separating the polymers from these waste products, they could then be used to create fiber-based construction materials like roof tiles.
Green blocks
Plastic is the biggest waste problem we have today. Any product which can help greatly reduce our plastic waste will ultimately impact our planet in the long run. One great example of this are green blocks or recycled blocks which are made of recycled plastic bags molded into bricks. While they aren’t built to take on heavy load like cinderblocks, they can be used for outdoor areas or dividers.
