The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Artifact 1: Assessment and analysis of a sample class
Rationele:
Performance indicator 7O says, "[The competent teacher] effectively uses appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress;".
In this example, I made a sample test based on a reading we had done in class. The students then took a quiz (the first link) based on the reading and I was able to see how the students were doing. After I got my responses I was able to collect the data (second link) and see how these students did on the assessment and if there were any students who might need follow up or extra help. It also allowed for me to evaluate if I needed to do anything different for the years moving forward in teaching it.
Artifact 2: Rubric for an assessment
Rationale:
Performance indicator 7J, "uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes."
This is a rubric from one of the Spanish 2's speaking assessments they had related to a health unit. This rubric shows clear levels for where their performance could be, and it also show them what their learning targets are. The students had these criteria well ahead of time so they could know what they were expected to be able to learn and do. I have learned how important it is for these students to have these expectations, because if they don't have them, they might not know how to go about reaching what we want them to be able to.
