The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student
Artifact 1: hallway sentece races
Rationale:
Knowledge indicator 5F, "knows strategies to maximize student attentiveness and engagement."
This activity is one where students have partners and one of the partners has the sheet with the pictures and lines in the classroom (left) and the other partner goes out into the hallway and looks at the cut up sentences that are taped around the hallway outside of the classroom (right). The student in the halway memorizes the sentence (or a section at a time) and goes inside and tells their partner the sentence. The partner with the paper inside copies down what the partner from the hallway dictated to them on the sheet with the correct picture according to what they said. After they get a sentence they switch roles. The partners are all competing to try and see who can do it right first. I have learned that anything turned into a competition helps students stay engaged and wanting to participate. This game especially I have noticed a lot of student engagement and excitement for it. It is a very good game for input as well with reading, writing, speaking and listening. Making games that are fun and interactive and somewhat competitive is something that I have learned to do often to get good student participation and engagement.
Artifact 2: Lesson plan (highlighted part in activity 3)
Rationale:
Performance indicator 5Q, "uses effective co-planning and co-teaching techniques to deliver instruction to all students"
This is a lesson plan where I used the other teacher being in the room to my advantage. In the student work time, I had her go out into the hallway with the certain students who were especially struggling and work with them to be able to understand the vocabulary and grammer structures better. I had already taught it once, but a few of the students need to hear it more than once. This way she could work with the students in the hallway who needed it and I could monitor and answer questions for students who didn't need the extra help. I have learned how helpful it can be to use these resources of other instructors when you can because it really benefits the students.
