The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Artifact 1: Lesson plan
Rationale:
Knowledge indicator 6F, "recognizes the relationships among reading, writing, and oral communication and understands how to integrate these components to increase content learning."
This is one of my lesson plans that looks like a typical day in the classroom. In activity one it is a lot of speaking and listening. After that in activity 2 and 3 there is a lot of reading and writing together. After that, in section 3 there is some sharing out where the students get some more speaking. This helps them develop all their content knowledge in Spanish. I have learned how to best do this continually as I am teaching more and more.
Artifact 2: Reading activity from class
Rationale:
Performance indicator 6L, "facilitates the use of appropriate word identification and vocabulary strategies to develop each student’s understanding of content."
This is a reading activity that we did with the students. The students knew some of the related vocabulary as we were in a unit where we were learning about health, but some of these words were unknown so we had the class split up into groups and decipher each section they were assigned, then teach the class about the section and key words. We showed them how to research the words well and then allowed them to do this during the class. This is something that I have learned is really empowering for the students because then they learn their section really well and then are able to teach it to their classmates.
