This artifact was a component of PSED 546, Teaching of Science in Secondary Schools. In this course I conducted an Action Research project where I administered a pre-assessment to students in 7th grade Life Science, followed by a lesson, which was then followed by the administration of a post-assessment. The lesson was taught by two different methods that were easily distinguishable. The objective of the project was to determine if one method of teaching was more effective than the other. The pre and post assessments for all students from each of the lessons were graded and compared using statistical means to determine which method was more effective if at all. This project meets the Master Educator Outcome #6 because it allowed me to evaluate how effective my lessons are and if they are contributing to student achievement. As a responsible teacher, I need to continually find ways to improve my practice. The Action Research can be a way to get feedback to evaluate where I need to improve my lessons and what areas or topics I need to revisit. If I find that the students’ grades did not improve after my lesson, then I know that I need to improve the way that I present the content. If the students’ grades improve more with the first lesson than with the second, then I know that the second lesson is more effective and should use that lesson in the future. Without this information I would not know whether students were learning or achieving their goals.
