This artifact was a component of PSED 510, Teacher, School and Community. In this class, I wrote a critical analysis paper of a film based around education. I chose to watch the movie The Principal, which is about a teacher who is hired as a principal of a dangerous, drug and gang infested urban school. This movie depicts a school that is bound for failure due to lack of support by all stakeholders. The students, teachers, parents and community have all given up on the school and no longer provide support for one another. This critical analysis paper allowed me to look into additional resources to research what causes some urban schools to fail. What I found from my research was that the school, the teachers and the community all need to be supportive of one another for the school to be successful and to encourage the success of the students. When one of the components begins to lack support, the entire structure begins to break down. I believe that this is why it is so important to include the parents and community in the education of students. This artifact meets the Master Educator Outcome #4 because it allowed me to think critically about what can cause a school to fail, and I was also able to understand the importance of the connections between the teacher, school and community. I never realized how important it is that they all support each other and that breakdown can be devastating for a school and its students.
