In her book, “The Light in Their Eyes”, Sonia Nieto discusses the influence of culture on learning and how important it is that by having an understanding and connection to different cultures teachers can promote learning and equity in their schools. Teachers, students, parents and the community all have to work together to support the students so they can be successful. Students that come from different cultures may also bring with them a realm of experiences, both good and bad. Their backgrounds can significantly influence their learning. In my ESL course it occurred to me that I may have students who come from other countries where they may never have sat at a desk before, or they may have been displaced due to war or other intolerable conditions. It is important to make an effort to understand where the students from different cultures are coming from so that they will be welcomed in the school. It is also important as a teacher to make content accessible and meaningful to all students by presenting material in a variety of ways so that all students can be successful. Allowing students to share stories or parts of their culture with the class can help them feel that they are part of the classroom community. Also, displaying something from their culture in the classroom may also help them feel welcome and promote diversity.
