Hi everyone! I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. For some of you, much of my introduction will be a repeat as you have been in class with me before (perhaps even another one this semester). If that is is the case, I'm so glad that you have decided to take another course with me! If this is your first time having me as a professor, I look forward to getting to know you throughout the next few months (or weeks if you are taking this course during the summer term). Now, a little bit about who I am. I earned my undergraduate degree in English, with a minor in education. As soon as I stepped foot in the classroom I knew that I had found my life's passion. Teaching was like finding the Holy Grail! My initial certification was secondary English. By the time I earned my doctorate (from the University of Tennessee, Go Vols!) in English Education I had added two additional certifications (Middle School, English; Elementary, Grades 1-6) and was fortunate enough to teach at various levels, gaining experiences that still influence what I do today. Presently, I have been a professor at TTU for 21 years.
I live in Oak Ridge, a Federal National Park, and love the mountains of East Tennessee and the Appalachian region. I enjoy the culture and language of the people and am very proud that it's (Appalachia) my heritage. I love to travel, read (most anything, though, admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of science fiction), and spend time with my family. I'm mom to Ethan & Jordan (graduate students) wife to Bill, and dog-mom to Rocky (a German Shepherd) and Snickers (a Yorkie).
You may be thinking "more than enough info". . . Except check out my PowToon introduction
As a way for each of us to get to know one another, this introductory discussion is the perfect opportunity for everyone to learn a bit about what makes each of us, well, us. Please take a moment to introduce yourself, sharing some information by responding to the following prompts in a PowToon video (tutorials for creating a Powtoon is found to the right). Things to include:
The Basics
Your name (what you prefer to be called and, if different, the name under which you registered for the course)
Degree you are pursuing (why did you choose this concentration/degree)
Anticipated graduation semester/year
The Details
Write a brief intro for yourself, including your name. This will serve as your script for the video you will create (note: there’s no need to submit the script).
Choose your design, keeping in mind that it should connect to who you are in some manner. For example, for my introduction I chose a female avatar, added glasses, dark hair, and selected a school-related theme. Design should be engaging for viewers, making use of visuals and sound.
Introduce yourself by telling who you are (name; identity, such as teacher, learner, parent) what your interests are, what you value, etc. Share a minimum of 12 things.
Additional Info. Feel free to include any other information you think is relevant or that you’d like to share. Remember, the more we know about each other, the more engaging and enriching our discussions will be. Let’s create a welcoming and vibrant community together!
