Often, the terms technology literacy and digital literacy are used interchangeably. However, there is a decided and distinct difference between the two. So, if they are not synonymous, how are they different?
Technology Literacy. Technology literacy refers to the ability to effectively use and understand technology, including hardware, software, and digital tools. It encompasses skills such as:
Operating computers, mobile devices, and other digital technologies
Using productivity software like word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation tools
Navigating the internet and using web-based applications
Troubleshooting basic technical issues
Understanding how digital technologies work at a fundamental level
Technology literacy focuses on the practical and functional aspects of using technology to accomplish tasks, access information, and communicate.
Digital Literacy. Digital literacy is a broader concept that goes beyond just using technology. It encompasses the ability to:
Find, evaluate, and effectively use digital information
Understand the ethical and responsible use of digital technologies
Collaborate and communicate using digital tools
Create and produce digital content
Think critically about the role of technology in society (including schools)
Adapt to the constantly evolving digital landscape
Digital literacy involves critical thinking, problem-solving, and the application of technology in various contexts, including educational, professional, and personal settings. It emphasizes the ability to navigate, evaluate, and leverage digital information and resources effectively.
In summary, technology literacy focuses on the practical skills to use digital tools, while digital literacy encompasses a deeper understanding of how to engage with, evaluate, and utilize technology in meaningful and responsible ways.
