Michael Deering (GSLIS ‘24) completed his internship in partial fulfillment of requirements for the Advanced Certificate in Archives at the Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) in Corona, Queens this past Spring. His initial tour of the Museum and Center was shared with congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose visit coincided with Michael’s first day. Three months later, Ocasio-Cortez invited LAHM staff for a private tour of the National Archives in Washington D.C. While there, they met Colleen Shogan, the 11th Archivist of the United States and were shown numerous priceless documents dating back to the American Revolutionary war. The trip to our capital and the developing partnership between LAHM and Ocasio-Cortez highlight some exciting ways in which archives are evolving for new and existing audiences.
