Symington Toll or Symington Roadman's Cottage as it is also known, which sits beside the main road (A72) near the Symington road-end, (Biggar end) in the 1930s. These cottages would date back to the days of 'turnpike' toll roads but by the 30s they were owned by Lanarkshire County Council. Every roadman was responsible for a stretch of road and they took great pride in their work. This resident roadman for the Symington stretch standing at the door is Jimmy Grant - another of Colin Thorburn's great-grandfathers.

Symington Toll in the 1930s, which as we can see from the sign, doubled as a local shop selling 'Barr's Aerated Waters' and probably sweets. Barr's of Wishaw are still to this day famous for their soft drinks and in particular 'Irn Bru'.

Uploaded on the 14th June 2020. After the fall of France in June 1940 thousands of Polish troops arrived in the UK, many of them in this area. By October they had moved on but during those few months they had a very positive impact on the local population. The Elphinstone Hotel in Biggar and our own Eastend House were used as HQ building by the Free Polish Forces. Here we have Polish troops parading down Biggar High Street.

Biggar High Street - a wonderful image at the top of Biggar High Street taken in the 1950s. What's the car. This photo from Willie Paul the fishmonger / fruit & veg man. All the older residents of the Parish will remember Willie's mobile shop which kept us all supplied for a great many years. Wiilie was born in Thankerton and married Jean Robertson from 19 Millands Road. They have lived in retirement in Edinburgh Road, Biggar for many years. What was his connection with this particular car?
