Mary and Tam Bone and a young motorcycling lady-friend circa 1959 in front of Tam's Ford Prefect at their Leggatfoot Railway Cottage which sat adjacent to the main railway line in the field roughly half way between Covington House and the Leggatfoot railway bridge. There was an occupation (level) crossing there which only served the fields on either side of the railway - the pole is visible on the top right. It must have been some sort of 'right of access' the local farmer had from when the railway was built. Mary Bone (Charlies great aunt) was in charge of raising the barrier when required. Tam was in charge of a railway maintenance gang which won what was referred to as 'The Best Mile' (a much sought-after accolade in those days) on three consecutive years. He and Mary had three daughters Margaret, Mary and Agnes (Nan). When he retired from the railway they lived in Mill Road, Thankerton until his death in 1975. The railway cottage was demolished in the mid-1960s. Mary married Harry Clark and they lived in Carstairs - see the painting by Thea Mennie posted by Barry on 16/05. Margaret married David Greenshields and they lived in Mill Road and Nan married Jack Johnstone, a 'top-link'engine driver, and they also lived in Carstairs Village.
