The RaxPol is a modified Chevrolet Silverado 5500 with a research-grade X-Band Polarimetric radar. The RaxPol is like the DOW6 brother. This vehicle features specialized hydraulic arms that lift it off the ground. This is to collect more data in the air easily. The rotating radar scans and collects data about a supercell thunderstorm. Supercell thunderstorms are anvil-shaped thunderstorms with heavy winds that can produce a tornado. This vehicle is used to update radars to help other meteorologists keep track of storms. Surprisingly, this vehicle is also used by NASA itself. The RaxPol has been used for 14 years, since 2011.
