From Beyond Perception and Wiring Senses to this year’s Embody Envision Ensemble, Jockey Club Project IDEA has developed a sustained inquiry into sensory experience as mediated by art and technology. This year, the exhibition marks a conceptual shift, moving beyond questions of sensory transformation or extension to focus on the body itself and the moment in which perception is constituted.
The Chinese theme 感知蛛絲黐住枝樹枝 twists on the tongue, inviting a quiet rehearsal of perception through the subtle movements of mouth, breath, and voice. Stumbles, repetitions, and small readjustments remind us that perception is not an abstract act of understanding, but something continuously produced through the body’s negotiation with the world.
This resonates with the exhibition’s English theme, Embody Envision Ensemble, and reflects the project’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Through explorations of touch and movement, student works respond to the artistic participation and embodied experiences of people with physical disabilities. En-vision reconsiders the meaning of seeing through sensory translation and reconfiguration, opening perceptual pathways beyond vision for people with visual impairments. Ensemble foregrounds collective experience, rhythm, and co-creation, fostering inclusive modes of communication and expression for people with hearing impairments.
Bringing together works by students and instructors, the exhibition explores sound, tactility, movement, and spatial awareness. Student projects adopt playful and experimental approaches, allowing artistic creation to unfold as an immediate and embodied sensory dialogue. Instructor works place audiences in visually restricted or sensorially reconfigured situations, inviting them to reconsider how sound can locate space, carry memory, and activate imagination.
Focusing on physical disability, visual impairment, and hearing impairment, the Project echoes the linguistic meaning of the prefixes En- and Em-, to cause to be. Here, art and technology function not merely as tools, but as forces that empower, encourage, and embrace diverse ways of sensing. They expand modes of participation and transform difference into shared creative experience.
Embody Envision Ensemble is both a playful linguistic entry point and a sensory invitation. Like spider silk, delicate yet resilient, connections form between bodies, sounds, and spaces. Within these fine strands of perception, a collective multisensory ensemble gradually takes shape.
