Touch awakens hidden rhythms in objects, turning contact into a trigger for sound.
TouchTone breaks through limitations by enabling people with mobility impairments to interact through simple touch. It activates the hidden sounds embedded in the artwork through touch, creating an interactive experience with the piece. Each artwork includes at least one sensing point. Visitors can use the touch pen provided on the right side or simply touch with their hands to explore different sound-emitting locations hidden within the artwork. When a visitor contacts a sensing point, the small speaker at the bottom of the artwork plays the corresponding sound.
The instructor encouraged students to approach the design from an inclusive (cross-accessibility) perspective during creation—carefully considering the size, angle, and required touch pressure of each contact point. Students also used a range of conductive materials (such as iron wire, tin foil, and conductive ink) to create touch keys with different textures. They connected the circuits using Dupont wires, alligator clips, conductive ink, conductive tape, and metal hardware. As a result, audiences only need to make a light touch to trigger and play the sounds stored inside the interactive installation, and to discover the hidden information the students prepared.
