Gentle sweeps shape the volume of distance, translating fleeting movement into traces of sound.
“Movemin” is an instrument designed for people with mobility impairments. It is an interactive art installation inspired by an early electronic instrument—the Theremin. Unlike the Theremin, it incorporates capacitive sensors and infrared sensors, along with metal dynamic sculptures designed by the students, a touchable interface, and sound design—offering more diverse possibilities for how it can be played.
The capacitive and infrared sensors convert touch, distance, and hand gestures into sound-control signals. When an audience member’s body contacts the conductive areas, changes those areas, or alters the distance between their body and the sensors, the microcontroller detects these value changes and immediately modifies the pitch and timbre. In addition, some pieces include rotating metal sculptures: when the sculpture spins or moves relative to the sensors, the sensor readings also change, enabling airborne / contactless sound control.
Workshop Introduction
Students will create their own electronic musical instrument, Movemin, exploring the possibilities of "Musical expression for all": rethinking how to play an instrument, experimenting with different body movements or tools and devices, and combining this with pre-set computer music programs to create diverse and unique sound expressions, allowing more people to participate in the experience of music and interactive art.
Learning Focus
Comprehensive Design: Using metal materials, create kinetic sculptures or touch keyboards to build instrument interfaces that allow people of different abilities to participate.
From Circuit to Sound: Learn basic electronic circuits and mechanical principles, and master the technology of converting physical interactions into sound signals through procedural coding (such as Arduino).
Introduction to Sound Design: Using the Virtual Module Composer (VCV Rack), create your own unique timbres and effects by patching various signal modules.
