Before beginning the programme evaluation process, the school must make sure that all members of the school community are familiar with, and fully understand, the 2020 programme standards and practices.
The IB has developed a set of introductory materials which can be used to further the understanding of the standards and practices. These resources include an overall summary of the standards and practices, information about how they can be implemented in schools and guidelines about how to use them for programme development.
In some cases, it will be necessary to develop in the school community a greater understanding of the IB and the programme(s) the school offers. The following videos found here can be useful in this sense. These videos revolve around the following:
General information about the IB (learner profile, central elements of an IB education)
Introductions to each of the programmes
How IB programmes are implemented in different contexts
The wider IB community, and the relationships among IB schools and universities
There are also presentations about each of the programmes and brochures, flyers and posters which schools can use to familiarize members of the community with the IB.
The document What is an IB education? can also prove useful since it provides an overview of the central elements of the IB philosophy.
The school leadership team should start by considering which resources will be necessary to implement the inquiry, action and reflection cycle the programme evaluation process requires.
Although programme coordinators are the ones in charge of organizing the programme evaluation process, the evaluation process should be approached as a collaborative enterprise. All members of the school community should participate and be involved in the programme evaluation process.
The school should consider the following aspects, among others:
Planning and organization of the evaluation process
Time required for effective reflection and self-assessment
Opportunities for revision and update of programme documentation (policies, curriculum documents, etc)
Ways in which the whole school community will be consulted and involved
Ways in the active participation of teachers will be achieved
Requirements to be met in relation to professional development and opportunities for further professional development beyond what IB requires.
If the school is planning to send documentation in a language different from the one the school has indicated to the IB as its working language, this needs to be communicated to the school's IB World Schools manager at the beginning of the evaluation process. Similarly, if the school has been assigned an evaluation visit and needs meetings to be held in a language different from its working language, then this needs to be communicated to the school's IB manager at the beginning of the evaluation process too.
Finally, it is important that all teachers and members of the leadership team should have access to the Programme Resource Centre. The Programme Resource Centre contains all the official documents which were developed for schools to be able to have clear and accurate guidance about the programme evaluation process.
It is also important that the programme coordinator(s) ensure the roles for individual staff in the school are maintained and updated in MySchool.
