Action research is a cyclical process of change that involves planning, acting, observing and reflecting.
Action research aligns closely with key features of the IB programme:
Approaches to teaching and learning
centred on a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection – an interplay of asking, doing and thinking’ (IBO, 2019, p.6)
Programme evaluation and development
schools engage in a continuous cycle of inquiry, action and reflection to develop their programmes’ (IBO, 2020b, p.6).
Action research could support these features of the IB programme, at personal, team and community levels, developing practice at each level.

Nano PD: Action research in action
The IB has created a resource that introduces action research and highlights the ways in which it is central to programme development. It provides in-depth information on how to plan and reflect around the topic of action research, either as a team or for individual personal growth. The resource is called "Get to know action research" and is the first of three series of material related to action research that the IB will provide to support schools in their implementation of action research.
