PHOENIX CANDY BOXES:
Back in the day, the Phoenix Candy Company of Brooklyn, NY put out all sorts of delicious treats, including the legendary Now and Later candies - sort of a precursor to Starbursts. But the ones I loved were the Candy and Toy line which were little boxes of fun featuring every kid's favorite characters on the box and chewy taffy and little plastic prizes inside, all for a penny! Some of these boxes now fetch hundreds of dollars apiece at auction, if you can track them down, so I have recreated some of them for you here.
Holy Sweet and Sour Batman! This series featured 12 of the Caped Crusader's most fearsome foes. First up - The Joker!
One of my all-time favorite super heroes - The Ghost Who Walks was a huge pulp hit for decades!
It's another rich guy putting on a mask to fight crime. Sound familiar? This Super Novelty candy was tied into Disney's 1960s TV series.
I loved this show as a kid, and still enjoy catching an episode now and then. At the time it was the most expensively produced show on the air!
Well, "Blow me down!" If it ain't that squinty-eyed sailor man himself, Popeye! One of my childhood cartoon heroes, indeed! "Where's me spinach?"
Such goofy fun this cartoon was! These boxes are extremely rare now. Watch out for that treeeeee!
More silly stuff from the great Jay Ward, this cool co-star on the George of the Jungle Show was famous for hitting the Super Sauce just a little too hard!
Slapstick superstars and comedy geniuses, this was one family act that really had legs. From movies, to TV, to cartoons, to candy boxes, these guys did it all!
Two of my favorite things - classic movie monsters and delicious sweet treats! Click the images at right or left to download dozens of these beauties on the Monsters Page!
WORLD CANDIES BOXES
Not to be outdone, the World Candies Company also put out "candy sticks" in slender little boxes adorned with popular cartoon characters and sports-related themes. These flimsy little fellas are quite scarce, with some of them going for big bucks indeed!
For collectors, these are some of the Holy Grails of candy-related ephemera, with a complete set fetching hundreds, and an unopened display box going for thousands! Lucky for you, all it will take is a few hours of your time to recreate these little gems. Just click on an image to download the complete set of six boxes and/or the counter display.
Here is another set of extremely rare bits of candy counter culture: The Flintstones Stone Age Candy. This awesome set features the whole family, plus Fred's best buddy Barney. Yabba-Dabba-Doo!
Here is yet another delightful little item. This little item is also quite rare, and sports some truly kitschy graphics. This leering little devil seems to be saying, " They're not just tasty, they're EVIL-icious!"
NOVEL CANDY BOXES
In the 1950s, the Novel Candy Company produced several beautiful boxes featuring popular characters and themes of the day.
Like the Phoenix offerings, these also came with a prize inside. These little units are now ultra- rare!
Riding high on the '50s "cowboy craze," this box is based on the 1955 film which featured Sterling Hayden as the titular gunslinger.
