My client is TIY (Teesside Inspired Youth) Project and they are telling me to create a media product for the theme of 'Colour - Neon' They are asking me to do this to showcase the creativity in the area and inspire people to express themselves. I am allowed to pick my own target audience and I decided to chose people aged 13 and above. The deadline is the 10/05/2024 so in 2 months and the resubmission deadline is 24/05/2024 so 2 weeks after the deadline.
From the 06/03/2024 I completed my Gantt chart my blog link is already included and my skills choice has already been chosen.
From the 14/03/2024 I completed colour and composition, market research and USP, innovation and technical constraints research and historical and contemporary research.
From the 22/03/2024 I completed project proposal project planning and planning documentation.
From the 10/04/2024 I completed contingency plan and experimentation. I'm happy with the speed that I have made progress.
From the 17/04/2024 I am still in the process of completing my final product and I am waiting for the equipment I ordered of demi i am adding to my production log.
By the 30/04/2024 I have finished producing my final product and I am starting iteration and feedback and reflection.
This mood board includes neon depictions from games, movies and animations. It also includes different genres such as horror, action etc. It also shows neon's function in the real world such as a open and close sign.
Colour theory is the studying of the colours on the colour wheel what they represent as well as shades, tones, tints and hues. Each colour represents certain themes and emotions.
Red represents sacrifice, danger and courage. Blue represents serenity, stability, inspiration or wisdom. Yellow represents happiness and sunshine. Green represents rebirth and renewal and immortality. Purple represents royalty and luxury. Orange represents amusement, energy or danger. The shade black represents death, mourning, evil magic and darkness. The shade white represents purity, perfection, honesty, cleanliness and beginnings. Neon is very closely linked to colour so this project in particular will include lots of colour work.
In my project I can use shades like black to create a sense of death and evil. This will provided by the filming being done late at night. Also to include shades of black and white I could include portions of the footage in black and white for example when the camera is damaged. The neon elements will stand out more in the darkness creating a good contrast.
I'm also going to use colours like blue and red and purple on the killers mask as neon lights to one, contrast the darkness, and two, to have the colours of the mask contrasting, for example, the dangerous and sacrificial red contrasting the blue and purple representing stability and royalty. This creates an uneasy atmosphere with the contrasting themes and irony with the royal purple being displayed in a dirty forest.

Composition for a short film includes angles, lighting and framing. It is how the shots are structured and what those specific shots purpose are either to the plot or to the enjoyment of the film.
Different camera angles commonly used in horror films are: hand held camera shots, low angles, tilted angles, close up, tracking or panning shots, reverse birds eye/ high angle. A hand held camera shot is when the camera operators use there hands instead of of a tripod or another base. A low angle shot is a shot taken from below the subject. A close up shot is a shot where the characters face fills up the entire frame. A birds eye angle is a shot taken somewhere close to a 90 degree angle above the scene.
My project will be mostly made up of handheld camera shots and at certain significant parts I might include a some tracking or panning shots for when a character is running away and maybe a few tilted angles to create unease or disorientation. I can use these angles when showing the killer or when the character is stressed I can use wide shots to show the distance between the killer and the character.

Camera shots and angles for a horror film by Ellie Horne on Prezi
One example of a horror film evolving neon is The Purge: Election Year. The whole idea of The Purge films is that there is one night a year where people could kill and get away with any crimes. what I will take from this movie is the bright colours of the masks the people wear contrasting the dark, bleak night.
For an example of a found footage movie there is The Blair Witch Project which is a movie in the form of found video footage of three film students who travelled to a small town to collect footage for a documentary about the a legendary local murderer in that area the Blair Witch.
A final example is the movie Spree this is a movie about a rideshare killing people to boost engagement on his livestream and to go viral. It includes elements of found footage with a lot of the movie being shot from the perspective of his livestream camera and dashcam. It also includes elements of neon as it is shot at night so the streets are bright and vibrant to contrast the killings.
What I will take from these other examples in the market is the Neon elements from The Purge and Spree as well as there cinematography elements taking traditional camera shots from the purge and possibly including some form of livestream inspired by Spree. And I will take the found footage dark handheld camera shots from The Blair Witch Project.
The unique selling point of this product is its neon theme and its link to target audience there are not many neon horror films out there which makes my product unique. It will also be unique as it is mostly found footage compared to other films which contain mostly normal camera shots.
New Film Technology's include Algorithmic video editing which streamlines post production through computer programming it offers endless opportunity's for precise editing. Real time rendering which accelerates CGI workflow allowing filmmakers to adjust interaction's between digital and physical elements instantly. 3D Printing which revolutions prop and costume design it allows any 3D rendered object to be printed out. Another very recent example of innovation in film is the emergency of AI videos which started of very primitive and unreal looking but now can sometimes resemble real life videos. One that has been popular lately is Sora which is OpenAI software which allows you to give it a video prompt and it will create it. Another innovation is LED volume which is a practice where where high end panels are used with a simulated background to create the illusion that someone is really there it allows filmmakers to save money and time and complex CGI and lighting fixes as the lighting is provided by the room.

I am using a computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse. For the actual filming of the project I will be using a camera, and microphone. The impact of the use of a computer is that I can only access it in college. However I can use my laptop to be able to do work at home but I cannot access certain programs. I might struggle getting actors for my project. The footage might corrupt so I would have to refilm it. The weather could be a problem as if it started raining I would have to cover the camera however rain could actually improve the atmosphere. Also lack of budget may be a problem as I will not have enough money to make visual assets like CGI a option. I also struggles to use the cameras and equipment.
My horror short film will be targeted towards people ages 13 or up or pg 13. This is because it will not contain any actual depictions of violence and rather have it cut or it be off screen. It also target towards a thrill seeking and people who enjoy being scared.
An early adaptation of Neon as a theme in films is Tron. Tron was revolutionary for the film industry because it was an early use of CGI and had whole CGI generated background and vehicles which impressed audiences back then.
However the theme of neon doesn't just have to be about neon lights like Tron or like a neon street light the theme can also be interpreted as vivid party them or bright colours as a theme it symbolises commerce and entertainment.
A recent example of neon in films is Spree which is a film about rideshare killing people. It involves the theme of neon through the fact that a portion of the film happens at night surrounded by neon street signs and lights.
This will influence my project as I will take the neon elements from Tron and try to incorporate it into a horror style and I will take the same approach as spree in the form of handheld camera.
I am going to make short film about neon and I'm going to present in the idea of a found footage horror short film involving the theme of neon I want to do this to improve my film making skills. Because this is a found footage video it will include less complex camera skills. However I might make it half found footage half normal camera shots. My short film will be about a man lost in a forest being stalked by a killer it will include exterior shots of the forest to find out where the character was before he was in the forest and what was going on. I might include the killer in the background of a few of the shots to show that he was already following the person. He will go into the forest looking for his friend who he was playing hide and seek with. Then it will go to found footage in the form of a handheld camera.
My goal is to get my project done on time to the standard a merit at minimum I am aiming for a bit higher a merit would sufficient. I think for my project I might struggle with the script writing for my projects as it will be mostly silent I am not the best at writing dialogue.
The client TIY expects me to create a media product around the theme of Neon. The client doesn't have any needs other than this. The users need for this product is for it to be 5 mins long and for it to include an element of horror. Also a requirement for deaf viewers could be subtitles however it is not very likely that I include this as I do not know how to and it would take up production time.
My horror short film must contain a neon film such as neon lights and colours, a horror element as it is a horror film and hand held camera shots as that is in my project proposal.
At least 5 mins of film as that's what I believe will be an acceptable length for my project. I am also planning on including a wide shot to show distance between two characters.
Basic costumes and designs for character. Also other camera angles such as close-up shots and other the shoulder shots. Also could include subtitles.
CGI shots as it would be hard to pull of and also I do not have the budget it will also not contain complex costumes.
This is my mind map it has the for different sections those sections being filming locations, preparation, existing horror films and research needed. This will help me as a loose plan to go back to like a checklist as well as a list of inspiration looking at similar products will help remind me what mine needs to contain.
Copyright stops me from using certain images or materials most of which shouldn't be a problem as the elements of my short film are not linked to a specific brand. I may have a bit of problem with costumes however as purge masks may be copyright by I assume some small changes would make it copyright friendly as at the end of the day its just a glowing mask which isn't a very original idea so it should be copyright friendly.
Legislation includes copyright but is a set of laws made by parliament. The production of my product will not break any laws or legislation. Make sure all legal documents are signed. Ask actors to give their consent to be in the production.
Health and safety refers to the precautions took to assure that my production does not risk the health or lives of anyone else. Steps taken to insure safety could be if any blades are used in the production of the film that they be blunt or fake as to not accidentally harm someone. Also the sharp corners of the mask need to be avoided by whoever is wearing it. Also if anyone has an illness they could be advised to not be apart of the production as it could risk the spreading illness and the efficiency of production. Ask actors to give their consent to appear in the production. Also when using XLR cable watch tripping over it and make sure it doesn't get in the way of cast and crew members.
If I cannot get other actors for my project I will film the film the film in a way where I can get shots of the killer and the person recording the footage by editing it and cutting between the persons perspective and shots of the killer from the persons perspective when the camera is dropped. Also if I can not get the mask for the killer I will find some neon lights or glowsticks and improvise a mask. If I cannot find anyone to use the boom mic I can use the on-board camera audio it will be lower quality. I may also use my phone for recording if i have problems with the camera.
I experimented with a few different drafts of scripts some where it maintained the horror theme and some where the atmosphere changed halfway through. I will also do a short story board which will be displayed on the left. I also experimented with different shot types.
First I had to decide a filming location I chose to film in near Kader Academy and next to the blue bell beck. I was originally planning to film at Acklam meadow but it was to far away and I would have had to move all the equipment there and back. Also I thought this was a decent filming area as I thought it would allow for shots of an open field and the bits of trees surrounding the beck would create the affect of a forest also a beck could be used for reflective shots. Also the streets lights create opportunity for interesting shots and lighting. A problem with this location is that it is a public area that people usually walk through or walk their dogs through so there where a few interruptions in the filming. Also for the shots taken in the tree area it was very muddy and slippery on the day of filming due to rain so it we had to be careful we didn't slip.
Then I set up the equipment first I attached the rode mic to the boom pole and attached to the input recorder and I attached the lens to the camera and removed the lens cap and put the SD card in. I ended up not using the mic and camera cause I did not know how to use it and had some problems getting the camera to focus so I ended up using my phone to record most of the project. I filmed the first few scenes with camera but they were out of focus and I couldn't figure out how to focus them. I also struggled to get the mic to work properly and ended up not using that either. As for the filming of the project I filmed multiple camera angles of some shots one to have them flow into to each other and two to have encase I don't like one angle that way if the shot flows into another shot it will stay consistent for example if there is a shot of someone walking into a building and it flows into a shot of that person walking in the doorway if I decide I don't like the angle of the shot of them walking in I cant retake if it is later on in the day because in the next shot it will be lighter out. I also have the shots where the actors messed up and I might include them as bloopers. For the project I couldn't get many props as I couldn't find the neon mask I was going to use so I decided to include the neon theme in the form of hallucinations caused by taking drugs. I also struggled directing people to do things because I had 4 of my friends there and they all had their own ideas so a lot of the project ended up improvised. The project ended up completely different from my intended vision for example I planned to have a lot more first person shots but I ended up with only one scene this is because the horror element only really comes in at the very end due to my actors doing there planned ideas. Also I hadn't finished the full script at the time of recording so improvisation was needed. I struggled writing the script as I don't really know how to write effective dialogue and I wanted most scenes to be silent to create tension a lot of that was lost as I needed the film to be longer and it being made up of mostly silent scenes made the film to short. It ended up being pretty short anyway as it stands it will be about 2 minutes long this is not as long as the intended five minutes which is a bit disappointing but there is not really much I can add. Also I would've liked to film more scenes so that it made more sense but there is not really much I can do at this point of production.
For the editing I first started of by putting the clips together in order and cutting certain parts of them to make them flow together better. I then turned the audio mixer up on most of the clips and turned the brightness down to create a scary atmosphere. I am also planning on adding text and fade out transitions. I might add music if I have time but it is not an intended feature all I am really planning on adding is basic editing. For the tripping effect my friend helped create it by using colour replace and colour change. Due to time constraints I may not fully complete the editing so scenes might feel abrupt. Also there may be some mistakes with audio as the headphones I where using at the time of editing where the last pair and the audio on them wouldn't work.
There are many iterations in filming in the form of bloopers there are a few that I filmed that I didn't deleted if they are not included in the final product I will find a way to link them. There is also an iteration of my final project in which I only included a blur effect on the scene of him tripping. I also experimented with different iterations of the film at different brightness's.
I think what I did well during this project is getting everything leading up to production done in a timely manner and also I think I did the editing alright. I also thought that the I did a good job on the cinematography even though I shot it on my phone.
I could've improved on my focus while doing my project and also I could have learnt more into how to use the camera instead of saving that part for production as when it came to that I could not properly use the camera and audio recorder so it ended up being filmed on my phone also I should've been more prepared on the day of the shoot as I had not properly completed the script or storyboard also I should've directed it better as I didn't really get to showcase my ideas as my actors didn't made up there own ideas. Overall I am still happy that I got a product done as I knew I would struggle doing this but I still got one done.
My initial target audience is was pg. 13 and I have think I have changed to more of a 17 or 18 demographic although it doesn't contain gore there are still references to suicide with the hanging and drugs.
I think my product has met the briefs requirement I have created the product on time and I have chose my own target audience although I do not know if the neon theme was as well included as it could've been overall though it met the brief.
The skills I have learnt during the production of this product are video editing and a bit of filming although I didn't really learn how use the cameras. Skills I can learn from here are animation games development and camera skills.
