The narrative below comes from an excerpt from a Wizard-Priest of the Goddess of Magic.
As a child, I remember viewing our town wizard in awe while he performed a few simple illusions. The inflection of his voice, the arc of his arms, and the articulation of arcane words of power were all part of a play. Each part is needed to produce the final product. Through the eyes of a five-year-old child, it appeared more like a dance than a focus on magical energies. Many years later, I would find out how difficult it was to truly train my mind and body to cast even the simplest of spells.
Throughout history, Magic has been a force few have understood in detail. This lack of understanding produces mystery, and with mystery comes a plethora of emotions. We have examples of many societies that fear, blame, and/or simply distrust magic. Primitive Orcs view their tribal shaman and witch doctors with dreaded fear. Meanwhile, cultured elven communities see magic as a form of art. Both sing songs about Magic, dance and even worship Magic, yet for the untrained, the very understanding of magic is a mystery.
Societies produce only a few individuals with the drive, determination, and insight to seek out and attempt to understand this force we call Magic. It’s not because these individuals possess some special gift the other members of society do not possess; they simply possess a need to know. A fascination, a thrust for knowledge, a desire to master unknown forces, or even a journey from one metaphysical sphere to another are reasons individuals pursue Magic. Of all these individuals, only a few overcome the hardships and become true wielders of magic. Then, these numbers are further reduced when those learning how to focus the magical energies falter. Then there is the problem of obtaining Magical Lore and materials. Remote places, dangerous Underdark caverns, and dilapidated runes attract those who seek this elusive knowledge. These places are also homes to hazardous monsters and take the lives of many knowledge seekers. A master of arcane or divine magic is; therefore, a truly special person who has undergone hardships the average member of society cannot even imagine.
Spellcasters, both arcane and divine, are a strange group of individuals. They typically possess heightened mental capacity and share a passion called Magic. People in any society are different, having varied likes and dislikes. Spellcasters are equally diverse in their views, likes, and dislikes. Further, the very passion that drives these individuals has a tendency to amplify these views. This is one of the reasons that ‘Mages’ are considered eccentric, strange, mysterious, and typically feared. This distinction is not only given to arcane-using mages but to the divine-based priests as well. There are many worshipers of strange and unusual deities that conduct their worship in remote and hidden places. They possess views that most societies would find unacceptable or intolerable. These individuals also seek to understand the powers of magic, though they have varied reasons for doing so. It is safe to say that those who pursue, wield, and/or covet magical power are looked upon mysteriously and even distrusted by most societies. And so, the web of mystery has already begun to weave itself around Magic.
Confusion and disinformation are our enemies in understanding magic. To fully comprehend and unravel the mystery around this thing we call Magic, one must have a set of definitions. Words that describe the aspects of magic are necessary.
Have you ever wondered what is Magic? How can you perceive it? And where is it found? These seemingly simple questions have baffled some of the most brilliant scholars and sages across the land. Quantifying and qualifying other substances and energies is child’s play when compared to defining Magic. If I were to compare Magic to the wind, one could begin to understand some of its properties. Like the wind, magic is invisible in its purest form, but its effects can be felt and witnessed. Like the wind, it is free-flowing and does not seem to have a place of origin. It can be as light as a breeze or as strong as a storm. It can manifest in rain, sleet, or even snow. It can cool you on a hot day or freeze you to a block of ice. It can be barely noticeable or have the power to move objects 100 men could not move. As you can see, the mystery surrounding Magic expands with each description.
Let us start with the last question first: where is Magic found? Magic is contained within everything. Rocks, trees, the wind, people, and monsters all possess some magic. It is believed that magic is a necessary component that allows creatures to live. Other faiths believe that magic is Life. It surrounds us, flows through us, and is part of our very existence. Magic is found everywhere. Some scholars argue that the very spirit of a creature is the center of magic in living beings, while others argue that the very body of living creatures could not live or breathe without magic. I believe that they are both right. Yet, if magic is everywhere, how can we not see, feel, or touch it?
This brings us to the second question: how can magic be perceived? How do you know it’s there if you cannot see, feel, smell, hear, or taste it? Magic in its purest form cannot be detected by any standard senses. Creatures that have a greater level of magic within their being have been known to ‘feel’ magical energies. The term ‘feel’ refers to an emotional/spiritual state rather than a tactile one. Powerful elven mages have been known to simply ‘feel’ the flow of magic around them. Creatures, such as dragons, have stated that they can taste, smell, and even physically/spiritually feel the flows of magic. Perhaps they possess senses beyond those allowed to us humans. But then again, dragons are very spiritual in nature and have the ability to see into the spirit (ethereal) world.
In places where magic swells, collects, or pools, even non-magical humans have experienced perceptions of Magic. Rarely does magic collect in places called nexus points or nodes. These places can have up to 100 times the normal amount of magical energy flowing through them. Although most nexus/nodes develop spontaneously, high magic calendar days and powerful holy days can aid in the formation of such places. These ‘high’ magic areas allow even the most mundane observers to ‘feel’ the flow of magic. Human mages have been known to see, smell, and even taste the magic that exists in these areas. Each nexus or node has a powerful existence within the spiritual world. If a person were to peek into the spiritual world, he would then be able to see the magic that collects within these nodes.
From the spiritual world, one can actually see nodes along the landscape. Further, under close examination, lines that connect the nodes to one another can also be seen. These lay-lines are magical flows that link and fuel these nodes with magical power. It is believed that in historical times, Dragons used these lay-lines as flying travel routes to circle the world. The wingfolk have also been known to use these lines as navigational guides, though how they can see them is a mystery. Some scholars believe that mundane birds and migratory animals also use these lay-lines as guides in their migrations. Again, how these creatures sense or detect these lay-lines is a mystery. One thing that is known is that highly magical creatures prefer living in or near these nexus points. Ghosts, Specters, and Wraths seem to populate these locations more frequently. Fairies are another race of creatures that prefer to make their homes in or near nodes. I am sure that many other magical creatures have a relationship with these strange magical wellsprings, but as of yet, we can only guess the reasons why.
The best description of magic I have found to date is as follows: Magic is an unseen chaotic force that permeates both the physical world and the spiritual world around us. Magic ebbs and flows from one source to another, continually recycling itself. Life cannot exist without it, nor can physical form or function. It is an energy that is unique to itself, unknown to most, but possessed by all.
Unlike other forces, Magic is easily focused. Simply put, magic can be collected from a large area and concentrated or ‘focused’ into a smaller area. This functionality is what allows mages, priests, and deities amazing control of the force of Magic. Without this ease of control, we, as mortals, would never be able to master the forces of magic. It is easy to misunderstand the term ‘easy’ in this text; easy is relative to the difficulty of controlling and focusing on other forces such as fire, a storm, or light. The manipulation of magic is by no means an easy task. It is sufficiently easy in relative terms that mundane creatures can manipulate it.
Now that we know that Magic is firmly linked to the spiritual world, we can also conclude that concepts that apply to spirituality may apply to Magic. In fact, the first and easiest form of magical manipulation is through Piety and devotion to a Deity. The priest must study the theological doctrine of his particular faith for many years. During this time, he builds up an understanding of his chosen doctrine, which sparks belief. This belief or ‘Faith’ is what allows the priest to channel magic. The process a priest uses to channel magic is often misunderstood. Some believe that priests are simply tools for the deities and only necessary as a point of reference for the deity. If this was the case, then an animal or even a rock could be used as a focus tool. It is this very belief that separates the priest from the rest of the populace. It is true that priests channel the power of the gods, but it is their belief that regulates how much of that power they can channel. A novice priest cannot channel the power necessary to bring people back from the dead, nor can he re-grow limbs or banish extra planer creatures. These functions are reserved for priests who have devoted themselves and developed an unshakable belief in their chosen deity. The priest’s belief functions like a valve to the deity’s power. The greater the belief instilled in the priest, the larger amounts of the deity’s power he can channel.
The question then becomes, what are priests channeling? Where is this magical power coming from? Lacking the knowledge of an immortal deity, I can only theorize that the magical power comes from a wellspring in the deity’s realm. A node or nexus created or controlled by the deity (See Postulate of Divine Extraction below). I envision each priest as a key to a door that connects to that ‘node.’ Whenever a priest utters a prayer, it opens a door that floods the priest with magical energy. This magical energy is then channeled through the priest manipulating the ambient magical energy in the immediate area and manifests as focused magic. The greater the priest's belief, the more ‘keys’ he possesses. These ‘keys’ will unlock bigger doors and allow the priest to manifest more powerful magical effects. Only the deity knows the level of faith a priest possesses and thus controls the amount of power his servant can successfully channel. Priests with large congregations of devoted worshipers often have access to more powerful spells. This ‘collective’ belief is what organized religions strive to achieve. Churches and other places of worship then become ‘infused’ with the faith of those who frequent them, which reinforces their presence in the spiritual world. Further, faith can be quite contagious, especially in places with a strong spiritual presence. This cyclic pattern allows the power of faith to recycle itself and grow over time. Priests are then ‘gatekeepers’ that link the faith to a divine power.
As priests channel energy directed by a deity, mages channel, or rather focus, magical energy around them. A mage replaces the devotion to a higher power by devoting himself to the study of arcane words/symbols of power. A mage’s belief is just as strong as a priest’s, but in the words and symbols of power, he understands and manipulates. Perhaps less spiritual in nature, the mage’s belief can only grow as he learns to decipher the knowledge compacted into words and symbols. One might ask if the very words or the symbols themselves have magic contained within. The answer to that question is much more difficult to answer than one could imagine.
While it is true that mages rely on these arcane symbols and power words, anyone can draw them or say them. It is also true that by simply saying or drawing these symbols, one cannot focus magic. So then, how does a mage focus magic? And what is missing in the formula that must be added to these symbols and power words? Well, mages usually (but not always) gesture to aid in focusing magic. Additionally, mages most often employ unusual components when ritual casting. Even these additions can be duplicated by a non-mage without the ability to focus magic. So then, there must be a missing aspect to arcane spell casting. Before we continue with this missing aspect, let us review what we know.
Unlike priests, mages collect the magical energies around them and focus them into a desired magical discharge. They use power words, arcane symbols, gestures, and material components to help them accomplish these feats. Further examination into this process reveals that the power words must be written using arcane symbols in a book commonly referred to as a Spellbook. The mage is then required to memorize strings of written symbols storing them into memory. This process is similar to remembering a poem, and each ‘poem-formula’ is known as a magical spell. The complexities of these formulas become increasingly difficult as the power focus becomes greater. Once committed to memory the mage then recites the formula using the appropriate power words, gestures, and material components. If done correctly, the result focuses on the magical forces and allows the mage to shape them according to the parameters of the formula.
Reading the above, one could misleadingly infer that mages could endlessly cast magical spells once they have mastered the formulas. This, unfortunately, is not the case; each time the spell formula is cast, it is removed from the mage’s memory. If the mage wants to cast the same spell again, he must re-memorize the formula. This shortfall leads us to believe there is a missing component needed to successfully cast arcane spells. First, it is important to note that as a mage gains understanding and insight into the arcane symbols, he increases his ability to successfully manipulate and memorize spell formulas. These formulas become longer and more difficult as they become more powerful. Additionally, mages are able to memorize more formulas as they advance in study. Each time a spell is cast, however, the formula is removed from memory, as stated above. This effect takes place regardless of how learned the mage may become. So then, what is the missing component?
Each time a mage commits a spell to memory, he locks a portion of his personal magic into his memory as well. Some argue that this tiny bit of magic comes from the mage’s physical body, while others state that it is spiritual in nature, coming directly from the spirit of the mage. In any case, it cannot be disputed that as a mage grows in understanding, the power needed to lock these spell formulas into memory also increases. A novice mage has considerably less ‘personal magical’ power than an arch-mage. This can be further confirmed when the novice and the arch-mage are observed with a Detect Magic spell. The personal magical level contained within the novice is considerably less than that of the arch-mage. However, to a lesser extent, the same effect holds true for a powerful priest in the service of their faith. All mages and priests attest to the fact that they feel both mentally and physically drained after spell casting. The more difficult the spell, the greater the depletion and fatigue of mental and physical aspects. From this observation, we can conclude that the personal level of magic a creature contains can be increased by the development of magical abilities.
Therefore, we can now correctly follow the arcane spell-casting process from start to finish.
Step 1 – mage studies the laws and rules that govern magical energies.
Step 2 – mage studies and learns the arcane symbols and words of power.
Step 3 – mage commits to memory the formulas (spells).
Step 4 – mage recites and forms the gestures required to funnel the ambient magic in the local area.
Step 5 – mage focuses the collected magical energy and discharges it as prescribed by the spell formula.
Step 6 – mage loses the spell from memory as the mental magical energy is released by the spell’s casting.
Step 7 – mage feels fatigued as some of his magic is temporarily depleted.
