Money & Standard of Currency Values
What stuff you have can often make the difference between a character surviving an encounter or involuntarily entering the spirit world. This section is focused on the stuff that can be purchased with coins. As in all societies, the quality and availability of stuff varies from place to place, and item costs listed here are the standard base. Further, there is the concept of settings to be considered; fantasy supply list varies greatly from those intended for use in a space-faring game. Here we will concentrate upon a STARNDRD FANTASY setting. GMs are encouraged to make modifications, additions, or subtractions to the list provided (Cost of Things PDF) based on the needs of their campaign setting.
Equipment is typically purchased with money, and thus, we need to know the financial system used in the standard fantasy game. Listed below are the basics which should be modified by a GM as desired.
Standard Monetary Coin Unit = 1 Silver Piece (Fantasy game) - the modern buying power of a 1 dollar bill.
Electrum - is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, with trace amounts of copper and other metals. It has also been produced artificially. The ancient civilizations called it 'mixed gold' or 'white gold,' as opposed to 'refined gold.' Its color ranges from pale to bright yellow, depending on the proportions of gold and silver. The gold content of naturally occurring electrum ranges from 40% to 60%, with copper and other trace elements making up no more than 5-7%. This wide range of percentages in its mineral composition makes this the least favorite metal for merchants and rarely used on a wide scale. The standard, if there is such a thing, accepted percentages for electrum are gold at 47%, silver at 48%, and other metals at 5%.
