Almost a year ago, a friend and I decided to start making our own indie game on the side of our studies. She would handle 3D Art and VFX and I would take care of the design and programming of the game.
Oko Tactics is a 1vs1 tactical card-game based on nature, in which you play cards on a shared grid. Every card depicts either an animal or a location and is associated with 1 or 2 biomes, as well as featuring an effect that may score points, influence the grid, or trigger other actions.
The game has a cute 3D low-poly style, and aim to be a chill experience while being a competitive one. The game is made using Unity Engine.
Our main inspiration, aside from nature, are card-games like Yu-Gi-Oh and Legends of Runeterra, and strategic grid-based games like Chess for instance.
For a while, Tess (my friend) and I wanted to do a game together. In november 2023, during a game jam, we decided to give a chance to one of our game ideas and to make a paper prototype. Quickly we realised this idea had some potential and we decided to make a video game out of it! With time, the paper prototype became a cross-platform online game!
The first of May 2024, I releaed the first devlog on Oko Tactics on my youtube channel. I wanted to keep track of our advancement, and to show what we were working on, while starting to build a community.
After a ton of playtests in may, we mostly focused on improving the UX & UI of the game until the end of june. We also added more content to the game in order to reach our pre-alpha goals. At this time we also started to get active on our discord : https://discord.gg/Ua7FdgfY, join the server now ;)
At the start of the summer 2024, Tess and I attented the DevGAMM Event in Vilnius, Lithuania. During a whole day, we showcased Oko Tactics to a bunch of people. I also had the opportunity to pitch Oko on stage! This event went amazing for us, and we even won The People's Choice Award! We came back to France with a big smile and a fully motivated!
