This handbook provides information to Pierpont faculty concerning what disability law requires of instructors when they are providing accommodations to students who are approved to receive accommodations by Pierpont's Support Services - Disability Services Office.
What are Essential Functions?
Essential Functions are things that must be performed, experienced, and/or learned by a student with or without accommodations.
Things that are essential for a job that a program is training a student for are NOT necessarily essential in the classroom.
Every Pierpont program must have a list of essential functions that students must be able to meet to graduate with a certificate or with an associates' degree.
As is shown on a student's Accommodation Letter, this is the only reason that an accommodation will be not provided - providing it would violate an essential function the program.
See the Essential Functions Handbook for Programs & Classes on this website.
Accommodation Letter Templates
To receive accommodations, a student must complete the following with the Disability Services Office:
Provide documentation of their disability(ies). (Faculty and staff do not have access to their diagnoses.)
Complete an intake.
Provide their Accommodation Letter to the instructors of their classes each semester.
Standard Accommodation Letter
This form is the basic one used. It will include the accommodations given in tables. The first row of each table will contain the accommodation
These letters do not expire. They can be revised when needed based on the disability needs of a student.
Provisional Accommodation Letter
These forms are used when a student is in the process of receiving the documentation of their disability. (Ex., in the process of getting an updated psychological evaluation.) When Disability Services receives the documentation, a Standard Accommodation Letter will be provided to the student.
Provisional Letters expire. If an instructor does not receive a Standard Letter by the expiration date, they can stop providing accommodations.
Dual Credit Courses - Accommodation Letter
High school students taking college classes, like other college students, must provide documentation, complete an intake, and provide their Accommodation Letter to their instructors.
After they graduate, if they attend Pierpont, they will receive a Standard Accommodation Letter. They do not have to complete a second intake as they are already registered with the Disability Services Office.
