Advising students with disabilities may present significant challenges to an academic advisor. When advising a student who has a disability, an advisor should understand the student’s goals, disability, and barriers the university may have inadvertently created. It is also important that advisors are aware of resources available on campus to assist the student during his/her college career.
Leslie L. Hemphill provides additional information in the article Advising Students with Disabilities on the Clearinghouse Academic Resources website.
If your office is not handicapped accessible and you need to meet with a student with a disability, contact the Office of Disability Services for help in making arrangements for meeting the student in another location. Our office also can arrange for interpreting for a faculty meeting with a student who has a hearing impairment.
