What is Positive Discipline?
Positive Discipline is a framework developed by Dr. Jane Nelsen that helps parents and teachers guide a child's behavior through mutual respect, open communication, and responsibility. It emphasizes teaching essential life skills, such as problem-solving and empathy, rather than punitive measures.
Positive Discipline is not about "being positive" or "saying yes". Rather, it is about seeking to understand "the why" behind a child's behavior with empathy and mutual respect. By separating the child from his or her behavior, the child can take responsibility for their actions and feel supported to make more thoughtful choices.
What Does it Look Like at Discovery?
At Discovery, Positive Discipline starts with creating an environment built on mutual respect and genuine connection with each student. It is important that teachers and adults set clear expectations, modeling expected behavior and communicating any consequences beforehand (not after). When issues arise, students respond better when adults connect with them in a meaningful way, take the time to understand their perspective, and enforce consequences while demonstrating kindness and support.
All families are requested to attend a Positive Discipline Training at the beginning of the year. These classes are taught by certified instructors in Positive Discipline (or PD). These classes are a great way to understand what PD is, and is not, and how to apply them in the classroom.
