An Extension of the Classroom
Field trips are an important extension of the classroom, offering students hands-on experiences that bring learning to life. They connect academic concepts to tangible experiences, helping students develop a deeper understanding of what they learn in the classroom.
In addition to boosting academic growth, field trips also foster social growth. Students develop new connections with peers and adults alike, and have the opportunity to develop healthy independence while they explore new surroundings. Field trips are a big part of the Discovery experience, with 5-8 field trips planned for each grade each year!
Grades K-5
In grades K-5, field trips are planned and initiated by teachers in collaboration with parent volunteers. The experiences chosen are designed to align with grade-level curriculum and supplement academic concepts in the classroom. For example, students learning about farm-to-table may visit a farm or get a behind-the-scenes tour of a grocery distribution site.
Below is a sample of field trips K-5 Discovery students have attended over the years:
Hiller Aviation Musem
Wunderlich Park
Seymour Marine Discovery Center
Tech Interactive
Ardenwood Farm
San Jose Library
Chitactac-Adams County Park
Middle School
In Middle School, field trip experiences are more focused on fostering team building, social-emotional growth, and general life skills. As students progress through Middle School, they are much more involved in the planning process, with some field trips being entirely planned by the students. This may look like developing a proposal for adoption, creating a budget for activities and food, and documenting and executing a detailed plan.

Renaissance Faire
San Jose Museum of Art
Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum
Rosie the Riveter Museum
Vasona Park
Wilder Ranch State Park
Overnight Trips
Overnight field trips are one of the most exciting and memorable experiences at Discovery. For many students, an overnight trip is their first time spending a night away from home. The first overnight starts in 4th grade, where students immerse themselves in nature while learning about the California gold rush in Coloma. This short overnight is a landmark experience that helps students foster independence and prepares them for the longer and unforgettable 5th grade science camp. Overnight field trips are more common in grades 6-8, with classes going on multiple overnight trips a year.
Overnight trips require a lot of planning and oversight, and are only possible with the generosity and dedication of parent chaperones. This is truly a Discovery community effort that brings unforgettable memories to students and adults alike.
