Work of the Week!
What an amazing painting! What a beautiful gradient. Thank you so much for bringing this in to show the class!
Miss Bowyer
Welcome to the Yellow Group!
Term 3
My name is Miss Bowyer! My aim is to create a safe, nurturing environment for pupils and to engage them in their work.
Pupils are given the opportunity to choose their own topics and are involved in class discussions about their learning. We will begin Term 3 by finishing our book study. The class voted on The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket.
Lately we have been promoting positive behaviour inside and outside the classroom by using house points, the golden achievement and Head Teacher awards.
Miss Bowyer
P.E. is on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please bring a kit to change into.
Pupils can bring water, diluting juice or flavoured water to drink during the day.
On Fridays we practice self care. Pupils can come to school dressed in comfortable clothes (but not pyjamas).
Homework for the term will be displayed below. Try to complete at least one per week. Swap which task you complete instead of always doing the same one! Click the document to open it fully. Pupils will also be given a book weekly to read at home, this must be brought in on Wednesdays and Fridays.

I will be teaching the Yellow Group most afternoons and all day on Fridays. I will bring these pupils into the school everyday and spend time with them each morning before they begin Maths until break time. After break they will have Literacy up until Lunch on Mondays - Thursdays.
On Mondays they have P.E. with Mrs Patterson and on Wednesday afternoons they will do P.E. and Religious & Moral Education with Miss Morrison.
We will be focusing our IDL lessons around our book study - Bad Beginnings by Lemony Snicket, which the pupils voted for. Once this is completed we will start our new topic 'Natural Disasters'. We are working with Primary 7 to share our learning. Our HWB topic for Term 3 will be Substance Misuse with a focus on smoking and vaping.
My name is Miss Grant and I am so excited to continue working with the yellow group next term on their numeracy and literacy. Apologies for the delay, I came into the school last term as a substitute teacher and I am delighted to be back this term with the yellow group.
My aim is to create a fun, nurturing and safe environment for all children to learn and reach their full potential. Next term my goal is for literacy and numeracy to be taught in a fun and active way through interactive games, group challenges, and real world problem-solving activities that keep students engaged and excited to learn.
This term in Numeracy we are going to be carrying on from our learning last term on decimals. We are going to be learning to order, compare and round up decimals. We will then use what we have learnt about decimals and put it into practice in our next maths topic 'Money'.
Additionally, we are going to be starting off our numeracy lessons using SumDog and a variety of maths games to work on our recall for multiplication and division.
Our writing focus this term is Persuasive writing. We are learning to give strong reasons for our opinion and explain them using interesting facts and details to convince our audience.
We are also going to continue with our spelling using Read, Write Inc.
Additionally, we are continuing to work on our reading skills with a mix of reading in small groups and reading comprehensions.
Science Centre Trip
The Yellow Group were invited to the Aberdeen Science Centre to participate in their new workshop "From Gust to Grid." This workshop explores how wind turbines generate electricity, and how we get that electricity into our homes.
During the workshop the pupils were given the opportunity to create their own miniature turbines and generate electricity!
J-T particularly enjoyed the workshop and was able to tell the group lots about turbines and electricity, well done!
Maksim said, "I didn't know how hard it was to create electricity!"
After the workshop the pupils were given the opportunity to explore other parts of the science centre. Two pupils enjoyed the 'complete the circuit' wall and found out that the human body is a conductor of electricity!
Take a look through our image carousel on the left to see the workshop, and on the right to see our explorations!

Christmas Bauble Art
The Yellow Group have really enjoyed using watercolours during Term 2. They decided they would like to use watercolours for their Christmas art. Lilo said that they are easier to use than normal paints.
Firstly the pupils had to find a circular object to draw around and think about the positioning of the baubles on their page. They then were able to look at Christmas pictures for inspiration before designing their baubles and choosing their colours.
After the drawings were complete the Yellow Group used their watercolour skills to brighten up their pictures! Once the pictures were dried some people decided to go over them with a black pen to make them stand out.

Show, Don't Tell
The Yellow Group noticed that the author of The Bad Beginning often likes to use a writing technique called 'Show, Don't Tell'. This writing technique is used in various types of creative writing. It allows the reader to experience the story and characters through actions, thoughts, sensory details, and feelings, rather than just a factual description. The class discussed how this could improve their writing.
Firstly, we worked in groups to read some examples from the story. We then continued group work to create our own. For example, we were given the phrase 'the house is dirty' and had to think about ways we could show this. We shared all our ideas on the board and discussed them as a class.
After this we wrote up our own 'show, don't tell' examples in our jotters. These were all based off of The Bad Beginning.
Vladimir said, "This is good because it means our writing will not be boring."
Junior said, "The ones we made as a group were so much better and sounded way more disgusting."
Lilo said, "The descriptions are so much better and make me feel like I am really in the story."
Have a look at some of our work on the right! The pupils came up with some really great descriptions. I particularly liked the descriptions 'there was a musty smell throughout the house' and 'mould encrusted plates' to describe how filthy Count Olaf's house was.

Writing an Interesting Blurb
The Yellow Group have started reading The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket ... with the blurb. However, it was not as boring as they expected!
The pupils started by completing a reading activity based on the blurb where the deciphered the author's writing style and why it made them so curious to read the book. Jack and Alfie concluded that the author used "reverse psychology" and the more the author told them not to read it, the more they wanted to! Tobi said it was very unique and Alekss said that the negative vocabulary made him curious. We all agreed it was a strange way to market the book, but it certainly worked!
We read the tale of Little Red (Riding Hood) and wrote our own blurbs for it in the style of Lemony Snicket. We highlighted our favourite phrases and made a word bank to help us. We needed to:
Write a short summary of the story without spoiling.
Use direct address.
Begin with "Dear Reader".
Our challenges were: To organise our writing, to use negative vocabulary and to persuade the reader.
Lots of the pupils used reverse psychology in an attempt to persuade the reader! All the pupils did a fantastic job.

Discovery Time
Pupils have had a discussion about the activities they would like to have during discovery time. Discovery time activities are to promote:
Creativity
Discovery
Socialising
Outdoor time
The activities will be changed and added over the course of the term as pupils learn to manage, organise and look after their resources. So far the pupils have been excellent at looking after their resources, most of which are stored in boxes. Have a look through the images to see the activities the pupils have picked and how they use the resources provided.
Some of the most popular activities have been painting, sculpting with clay and costume design. Two of the pupils were particularly good at working together to tidy up the painting activities - well done Dorcas and Caitlin!

Perspective drawing bring two dimensional drawings and painting to life. A one-point perspective drawing means the lines of perspective will eventually meet - this is called the vanishing point. The horizon line represents where the sea or land meets the sky in a picture. We talked about horizontal and vertical lines - our horizon line had to be horizontal.
We firstly learned to identify the vanishing point, the horizon line and the lines of perspective in example images. We then discussed in partners what we could use to help us and decided rulers were definitely required! We also discussed how objects, animals and people who were closer would look bigger, but if they were far away they would look smaller.
After looking at some examples we got started. Everyone did a super job and were able to practice using pastels and oil pastels to add colour to their drawings. Have a look at the image carousel on the right!

About our teacher
Hi, I am Mr. Martinez and I am delighted to be the teacher of your child this year. I was born in the sunny and warm Spain; I love travel, photography, cinema, books, and running.
I am here to support you and make the learning journey of your child enjoyable and meaningful. The Yellow Group is like a family and we aim to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors.
About our learning in Term 1 (Newsletter)
We will try to spend time outside as we believe that the Vitamin D, which is provided by the sun, is very important for our mental health and immune system. Even we can get this vitamin in cloudy days. That is why we will do mental maths outdoor with a whiteboard; read our favourite book or class novel outdoor; or go for the daily mile one day per week to some of the local areas around the school.
The topic for this term is going to be about architecture. We have decided to call it: "Architecture around the world". That is why our classroom is going to be decorated with some staff regarding this topic. We will be the protagonists of our learning through all the subjects: maths, literacy, science, etc. Also called interdisciplinary learning; following a series of guidelines in order to learn effectively and successfully.
P.E. is going to be every Wednesday, after lunch, in the gym hall with Mrs Patterson. It is a requirement to bring the P.E. kit and get change in the school.
Regarding numeracy, we are learning about place value and addition. Later on, we will focus on contents in connection with subtraction. Furthermore, in literacy we are finishing the class novel "The Witches" by Roald Dahl. Besides, in Read Writing Inc (RWI) we will do spelling for around 20 minutes every days and the spelling test is every Mondays. Grammar and handwriting is going to be one of our weekly priorities.
About our school
According to the school policies, it is allowed to bring diluting juice and flavoured water in juice bottle in school but no fizzy drinks.
Finally, the big changes in Peterhead Central for this year are the following: school hours are 9am to 3pm; assembly will be every Friday at 1:30pm; Fun 31 will happen every Friday before home time; and pupil council will be run every Friday straight after assembly.
Our class charter is ready on a wall. It is connected with four rights that all the children chose together. Also, each student made a original colourful boat.
Two kids of our yellow group really enjoyed the school trip to a campsite in the Highlands area. It was the last week of September.
"I really like abseiling and the food provided" Mia, P5.
Thankful for... coffee cup!
We have designed our own coffee cup and practiced some writing about what we are grateful in our lives.
"The coffee cups look very artistic and content nice personal messages." Matthew, P5.
In IDL, we are learning about architecture. That is why our topic of this term is called "Architecture around the world". We are exploring about different building from several cultures and countries. Today, we have design the plan of our own bedroom. Each child has chosen how to desing creativily their own bedroom after listening to some guidelines.
"The plans look very interesting. It is like a cartoon." Lilo, P5.
"I love this activity because it was fun." J-T, P5.
"This activity is good and relaxing because it is a quiet time to make different shapes and lines." David, P5.
Our discovery time is outdoors, we learn about how to cooperate and respect others in teams, how to ask for help, how to built with big materials and how to carry heavy things carefully. Outdoors activities are ideal for improving the mental health and general wellbeing of the children. We use resources such as ropes, tyres, beanbags, balls, etc. This time is plan in order to provide the children some autonomy in their learning. They ask for things that they may discover and this is when learning happens.
"This time outdoors is very good because we can get the vitamin D, we can play with friends and we can get fresh air." Vladimir, P6.
"I like it because we get outside and we build planes and other things." Alfie, P5.
