Welcome to the Harbour class page. My name is Suzanne Dow and I am the class teacher for the Harbour. I aim to create an environment where every child is able to learn, achieve and reach their potential. Children will learn through whole class activities, small group teaching and independent tasks to ensure that each child receives the support that best suits them. Please read our termly newsletters to find out what we will be learning. We hope you enjoy seeing what we have been doing.
Science Centre Trip
This week P7, along with P6 and P5, went on a trip to the Science Centre. We had time to explore the different areas of the Science Centre, before taking part in a workshop about renewable energy. This involved creating wind turbines from lego and producing real electricity! P7 had a great time and all were able to work together to create electricity.
Maths
P7 asked to take their learning about time into the playground, to time themselves taking part in different activities. Before going outside we agreed on what the challenges would be and we made some predictions about how long these activities would take. Each group kept a record of the timings for each activity, recording using a stopwatch up to hundredths of a second. Pupils then identified who was the fastest in each challenge. P7 showed great teamwork, were active in the challenges and in their learning and showed nurture to each other through support and encouragement. Some of the children from the Sanctuary joined us and P7 showed equity by helping them take part in the challenges and doing some of the timing.
IDL
We have been learning about earthquakes. Over the past few weeks we have learned how and why earthquakes happen, tracked earthquakes happening across the world and how to prepare for and what to do during an earthquake. For our final challenge we designed and created earthquake proof buildings. Before starting we discussed what to consider for our design and agreed what good teamwork would look and sound like. After designing our buildings, we used blocks and dominos to build our structures. These were then tested in an earthquake to find out how earthquake proof they were. Check out our before and after pictures to see how well our buildings survived!
Technologies
We have been learning about alogrithms and programming languages by using MicroBits. This week we have been focussing on iteration and selection. Everyone was able to program the MicroBit using iteration and one using selection. There was some fantastic team work and peer support as we debugged and tested our programs.
IDL
This term our IDL focus is on Natural Disasters. We started this by learning about the layers of Earth. To show our learning we each created a poster, showing and labelling each layer. To do this we used our Maths skills by measuring each circle and using a compass to draw them accurately. We finished them by labelling the layers and including some facts to show what we have learned.
Writing
We began the year by doing some reflective writing. Our focus was Reflecting on 2024 and Looking Forward to 2025. Before starting we talked about what would be included in our writing and agreed to include memories, feelings and descriptions.
KD Dance
We were lucky to have Summer and Rihanna from KD Dance come and lead a workshop for us. To start with, we warmed up and then learned a dance together. A dance battle took place next, but it was too close for a winner to be chosen. We finished with demonstrating different ways to cross the room based on the music playing. This included marching, skipping and side stepping. Thank you to Summer and Rihanna for coming and teaching us some more about dance.
Red Cross Visit
James from the Red Cross came to teach us about migration and empathy. We learned the difference between empathy and sympathy and the definitions of refugees and asylum seekers. James taught us about the role of the Red Cross and shared a story with us about a boy who had to leave his home and travel to the UK to be safe. As part of this we wrote down words from his story and used these to create a reflective poem. This gave us a chance to use our poetry skills that we have been working on this term. Thank you to James for visiting us.
Visit to the Sanctuary
Some of us visited the Sanctuary to share our knowledge about building domino runs. We helped them to design and build their own domino runs. This was to help develop their motor skills and resilience to learning. We had a great time helping the younger pupils. It was fun to share our learning and teach skills.
Rememberance Day
We spent some time discussing the significance of Rememberance Day and how it is observed. After taking part in the 2 minute silence we analysed the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. We used this poem to create some blackout poetry, where we create a new poem from an exisiting text. To do this we chose the words and phrases that we felt were the most important and marked these. We combined the words with images that represent Rememberance Day to create our final product.
Maths
We have started this term by developing our knowledge of word problems. To begin this we spent time sorting and identifying the vocabulary used in word problems. We sorted the words and phrases into groups that would be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Following this, we spent time practising identifying the correct operation to solve different word problems.
IDL
This term we have been learning about the Scottish Wars of Independence. As part of our learning we have been researching castles and learning about their features. The Purple Group have also been learning about castles, so we decided to join together and share our learning. In groups, we created posters that we can display to share interesting facts. There was fantastic work from everybody and P7 enjoyed supporting the younger pupils.
Thank You Letters
After having such a fantastic week away for our P7 residential, we decided to write our own thank you letters to the staff. In our letters we chose to write about our favourite things about the week and let the staff know how they had helped to make our week special. The letters have now been sent in the post to Abernethy to let the staff know how much we appreciated them. You can read some of our letters below.
P7 Residential
P7 had a fantastic week at Abernethy Outdoor Centre. We took part in a range of activities including archery, climbing, canoeing, raft building and team challenges. Miss Dow and Miss Morgan were very impressed by the way everyone took part, challenged themselves and worked together. Our school values were on display all week and the children were excellent representatives of our school. It has been an amazing start to Primary 7!
Discovery Time
We have been enjoying our discovery time, which happens 3 times a week. During this time children can choose activities from different zones to develop their skills and learning. This term we are focussing on developing our Self Management skills through board games, crafts and building. One of our pupils worked very hard on creating a domino run out of scrabble tiles and enjoyed seeing if it worked the whole way round.
