Interacting with SCAdians

So, you're at your first event! Welcome, we really hope you're enjoying yourself! But one of the first things you're going to notice (other than the really cool outfits) is that everyone is referring to each other in a very different way than what you're used to. What's up with that?

Just like in the historical Middle Ages there is a hierarchy within the SCA. SCAdians that have received certain ranks for completing certain tasks or receiving certain awards are granted the honor of a title and regalia. Just like in the modern world, when you interact with someone of higher rank, you tend to refer to them as "sir" or "ma'am;" we do the same in the SCA, but with a bit more flare.

In this section will be an explanation of how to interact with SCAdians depending on their rank. Do not worry if it takes you awhile to become accustomed to these pleasantries; we understand that Newcomers need time to learn and adjust to the ways of the SCA. Beyond this webpage there are subpages that will specifically aid you in learning how to identify the various ranks that SCAdians can achieve. Learning this can take time, too, but just remember if all else fails: anyone with a pointy crown-like thing on their head can be called "Your Excellency."
