Feast FAQ

Below are some of the common questions Newcomers have concerning their first feast. For more in-depth information, consider purchasing the Known World Handbook and reading pages 76-79 for Rycheza z Polska’s insight into this SCA tradition. Similarly, the SCA Newcomer’s Portal has a wonderful page on Food and Drink for you to explore as well.

Does feast cost money?

Yes. Feast is a massive endeavor that takes many talented individuals time and skill to prepare. However, $8-$15 for a multi-course meal is not a bad price at all! Try to pre-register early for any event you’re planning on going to and pay for feast at this time because feast can sell out.

Where do I sit?

Anywhere you like other than the high table! Feast is typically banquet-style seating. You may find yourself sitting next to your shire members, a foreign Baron, or perhaps others you have yet to meet.

Where are the plates, utensils, and cups?

These items are known as feast gear and you must provide your own. There’s a quick list of what to pack on the Feast Gear page.

What will be served?

Depending on the kingdom/event, a menu is often provided in the event brochure you receive at Troll.

How long does feast last?

This really depends on the feastocrat and kitchen staff. Usually feast lasts about an hour to an hour and a half, but issues with large scale cooking at event sites can sometimes cause it to take longer.

How can I help with the next feast?

Excellent question! The shire hosting the event is usually the one that prepares feast. Ask your Chatelaine when your shire’s next event is. From there, you can mention to your Chatelaine your interest in helping with feast and they can point you in the direction of other members that enjoy working in the kitchens.
