The Raspbian operating system is installed on the Raspberry Pi machine; which is a matchstick box/or, box of cigarette's sized computer...small board computer...which is very portable, light and easy to carry around.
It is also extensible allowing for the add on of other boards: camera/robotics/-etc.; these other boards are generally known as being called, 'pie hats'.
One of it's main selling points is the cost...the 'latest' Raspberry Pi machine costs only, £40.00; thus, causing many members of the general public to want to buy/own them.
However, in reality, there are many other 'hidden' costs, as well...including buying additional hardware...such as interface leads/keyboard/mouse/monitor/and, so on; not to mention, manuals, teaching you how to use it properly/or, best...getting to know it to it's fullest possible extent.
Yet, another factor that makes it very interesting...is that this machine is eminently 'programmable'. As it's operating system is, in essence, a modified version of Linux; therefore, it's possible to do such things as Bash Shell scripting/and, C programming/too, it usually comes with Scratch; and, there are many other FREE programming languages you can load onto it.
As well as, allowing users to get themselves familiar with learning how to use Linux based operating system: Raspbian...which is very different from learning to use Microsoft Windows; it's also possible to experiment with using many other operating systems on there...including, Linux Mint/Kodi/-etc. The operating system itself is loaded onto a small less than thumb nail sized miniature memory stick...which you insert into one of the Raspbian pi ports.
It is also very well worthwhile noting that you can run the Raspberry Pi in something called: 'headless' mode; which means it doesn't need any other attachments to work with...such as keyboard/mouse; but, instead, you simply sign in through another computing machine...such as you normal Desktop computer...using special SSH software...and, then, you can write/store files...thus, enabling you to use it as being an external storage device/or, programmable external computer...a bit like working in the 'cloud'.
