This site provides several free samples of picture cards for academics, scheduling, social/emotional learning, and general communication. First/then cards help students internalize the order of events and cause and effect relationships between completing one activity and then taking part in a more desirable activity. Visual schedules and reminder cards can help students build independence, and any of the images can be used to replace or supplement speech for students who are not yet able to clearly state their needs and desires aloud.Â
This website, sponsored by the Rondal McDonald House Charities, provides a free tool to create your own visuals. Just follow these simple steps:
Select the size (larger for young children, smaller for older students).
Click Add on the first shape.
Search for the word you want and pick the image.
Type the word in the box for the label.
When you have finished the page, you can save a pdf and/or print the cards.
You will probably want to laminate the cards and consider attaching Velcro to them and to a laminated folder, a desk, or another surface.
Picto4Me is a free website that allows you to create communication tools for students using visuals. It uses your Google account to save your creations. You could create the board on your student's device or generate a QR code for students to scan and access the board. Using a touch-sensitive device, such as a tablet or iPad, students can touch the words they want to say and have the device speak for or with them. When using these devices, you also can point to the relevant images as you speak.
Click above to go to the site and set up your communication board.
This is a great tutorial on using Picto4Me to support students with special needs and those who are learning English.
