Education often includes a lot of jargon, which can be confusing at first. Don’t hesitate to ask another teacher or an administrator for clarification on terms you may encounter, such as "evidence-based practices", "high-leverage practices", and "pedagogy". Understanding these concepts is important for supporting effective teaching and learning, and your colleagues are there to help you navigate these essential terms.
Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) are teacher behaviors that have been shown over multiple research studies to effectively increase student learning. The Kentucky Department of Education provides a deep dive into Evidence-Based Practices. You may want to watch their video on Evidence Based Practices and Targeted Support and Improvement Schools a few minutes at a time. You can also slow down the speed by clicking on the settings gear in the bottom left and choosing Playback Speed and then .75 or whatever fits you best.
High Leverage Practices (HLPs are 22 actions and behaviors that we can implement to have a positive impact on our students with special needs. The HLPs were developed by the Council for Exceptional Children to guide better preparation for special educators in collaboration, assessment, social/ emotional/behavioral practices, and instruction. Pedagogy is the study of how we teach knowledge, concepts, and skills. Through his Helpful Professor YouTube channel, Dr. Chris Drew shares a quick video to introduce several aspects of pedagogy. You can view it at The Helpful Professor Explains Pedagogy and read more at What are Pedagogical Skills.
