What is TLM?
Teaching-Learning Materials (TLM) are tools that make learning interactive and engaging. They include books, charts, videos, models, flashcards, and games, helping students understand concepts through visual, auditory, and hands-on experiences. TLMs are important because they support learning by offering fresh perspectives and repeated practice through materials like videos and worksheets. They also provide structure to lessons, making key points easier to remember with tools like posters and summaries. Additionally, TLMs cater to different learning styles, allowing teachers to personalise lessons so that all students can grasp concepts effectively. In today’s changing world, TLMs play a vital role in making education more engaging, effective, and student-friendly.
Project on Rain Water Harvesting:
Rainwater harvesting is the process of collecting, storing, and using rainwater for various purposes. Typically, rainwater is captured from surfaces like rooftops, guided through gutters and downspouts, and stored in tanks or cisterns. This collected water can then be used for irrigation, flushing toilets, or even drinking after appropriate treatment, making it a sustainable method to conserve water and reduce dependency on municipal supplies.
In our B.Ed program, one of our tasks is to create a Teaching and Learning Material (TLM). As part of that activity, I've developed this rainwater harvesting project. This project not only demonstrates the sustainable benefits and methods of harvesting rainwater but also serves as a practical tool for teaching these concepts. Later, we will be giving a viva on this project.
For my B.Ed lesson, I’ve created this TLM to begin the lesson with the first step, which is motivation. In this step, the goal is to indirectly lead students toward the title of the topic without directly stating it. I’ll discuss things related to the topic, focusing on the surroundings and context, and ask guiding questions to encourage students to figure out the topic on their own. Once students provide the correct answer, we can start the lesson.
In this case, I’ve made a chart that illustrates the growing stages of human life. This chart will help me drive the students towards the main topic by allowing them to reflect on and recognize the different stages of human growth. Through this, students will be engaged and curious, and will eventually arrive at the topic themselves, which we can then begin discussing in detail.
