Our Tenant Organizer works with tenants in the neighborhood to support formed tenant associations or assist interested tenants in setting up a tenant association. We aim to increase tenant association capacity and engagement. If you are wondering about starting a tenant association in your building or you are part of a tenant association that could use further assistance please reach out!
Community members are setting up a OV Tenant Solidarity Network which will be a flexible and responsive network of local tenants who can support each other when facing difficulties or removal by their landlords. This is an important aspect to tenant work in OV because a lot of affordable units in the neighborhood are in low density buildings with fewer than six units (more or less what you need for tenant associations). This can make it easier for tenant rights to be refused; and providing community support when this happens is crucial.
The TSP has held a number of tenant workshops to connect with tenants and spread information on tenant rights. Linked here is the recording of our Tenant Rights Workshop that reviews your rights as a tenant, how to exercise them and explaining what tenant associations are.
Linked here is a tenant union starter kit that any tenant in Toronto can use to work towards organizing their building when or before facing difficulty and displacement. Please contact us at ovtenants@gmail.com if you have any questions or need assistance!
