The two buttons at the bottom of the map toggle between Map and Satellite views.
Map view shows surrounding area and buildings in the correct scale based on a Google Map background.
Satellite view shows surrounding area and buildings in the correct scale based on a Google Satellite background.
The map and images are the correct scale and can be used as the basis for placing new buildings or documenting existing.
The level of accuracy depends on the quality of the background images. In many cases there is quite a bit that is visible in the background images.
This building of the National Academies in Washington DC has quite a bit of detail.
Tracing over the background image creates a building footprint in the ONUMA System.
Custom images can also be imported as reference into the site and building level.
For example this image is from the web site of the National Academies and shows a floor plan that will be used to create the BIM of the interior spaces.
Note that this method would not be used if a CAD or BIM file is available for the building to import.
Using background images is a good way to rapidly create BIMs regardless of what is available in CAD or BIM.
In Edit mode turn Views+Data On
On Background image setting on lower right, enter a New background name
Select image file by finding it or dragging it on top of the interface. JPEG or PNG format.
Click Upload
Full Zoom to view image.
Turn Background image setting, Edit On
Drag image into desired position. In this example note that the image is larger than the floor plan and it has been moved to align to the lower left corner of the floor slab.
Click Scale+Rotate then select the origin or center point of the scale. In this example the lower left corner is selected.
The second click is the starting angle of rotation and point of scale. In this example the opposite corner of the background image floor plan is selected.
Click and drag to rotate and scale at the same time. In this example the opposite corner of the building image is scaled to match the floor slab, which was scaled based on the Google Earth site map.
After clicking to confirm, a pop-up box gives you the option to enter a Length. For example, if the background images length is known then entering it will snap to that dimension.
Click submit and confirm the image lines up with the plan.
In Edit mode turn Add Objects on
