6th Class learned how to solve a real life problem such as calculating their running speed. They focused on Time, Distance and Speed. Using a trundle wheels they measured a distance in the yard. They used the timer on their class tablet and the teacher’s mobile phone, to calculate the time it took each child to run a certain distance. Finishing with ‘Dad’s Silly Triangle’ they calculated the speed of each child. It got quite competitive at times!
4th Class were investigating fractions by creating fraction number lines with string and paperclips. Making and dividing shapes into equal parts on geoboards with elastic bands and producing a fraction wall using strips of paper.
6th Class became familiar with the weight of items in their homes and learnt how to use weighing instruments. They brought in some household products and began estimating and measuring the items. They were then able to measure the weight of their items using the analogue and digital scales. They also made a weight line going from lightest to heaviest.
4th Class used matchsticks and blue tac to construct 3D shapes such as cubes and triangular / square based pyramids.
Cube
Square based Pyramid
Triangular based Pyramid
6th class did a lot of hands-on work when they were learning about the properties of 3D polyhedra. This was a creative and fun way to learn about shape. After looking at and talking about the solid 3D shapes, the girls were set a challenge to make and create 3D shapes using marshmallows and cocktail sticks. They then did a ‘Show and Tell’ for the rest of the class, and did a little tasting afterwards!
6th class were learning about coordinates and then put their knowledge of the x and y axis to create some beautiful pictures on geoboards using coordinates.
Junior Infants used Maths to solve real world problems such as going to the market and shopping for food. They also used coloured teddies, pegs and a number line to solve problems and took part in fun games such as Turkey Chase.
