As part of the South East Engineering Festival, which took place during the national Engineers Week 4th – 11th of March. 4th class were allocated 'Robot: Electrical Circuit Class Kits'. By creating their very own light-up robot, pupils learnt about electrical currents through constructing simple circuits. 4th class experimented with switches and discovered the 3 important conditions which must exist in order for electrical currents to flow; an energy source, conductive material and a circuit. 4th class also discussed how robots help us in our daily life.
5th Class also took part in Engineers Week and constructed towers using marshmallows and sticks. Great teamwork and design!
During Engineers Week, 5th class were given group tasks to complete. They read the challenge on the card, discussed and formed a plan, created their invention and then tested it. Super creations!
4th class looked at bridges and examined the shapes (triangles/ovals) and designs used to make bridges strong or structurally sound. 4th class investigated the longest bridge in Ireland 'Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge' N25 crossing the Barrow at New Ross (Length 900m) and created their own bridges in their groups using sheets of paper.
Senior infants were very creative during Engineers Week. Check out their super projects below!
Junior Infants enjoyed Engineers Week. They explored building design using magnets and Lego.
6th Class were given an Engineering challenge where they had to design and create a new board game. Check out their amazing new board games below!
Boardgame 1: Beat the board!
There are 2-6 players. There are question and answer cards. If you get the answer right, you move forward the number of spaces written on the card. If you get the answer wrong, you move backwards. The first to get to the centre wins the Beat the Board trophy!
Step 1: Design and make.
Step 2: Final product – play and enjoy!
Boardgame 2: Warble
Roll a dice. Move this number of places on the board. If you land on a colour, pick that colour card. If you answer wrong, you move back one space. If you get the answer right, you stay where you are. The first person to reach the end of the board, wins.
Step 1: Design and create
Step 2: Play and have fun!
Boardgame 3: Traffic Jam
Roll a six on a dice to start. If you land in front of a house, you must answer a question. If you answer the question correctly, you roll the dice again and continue on. If you answer it incorrectly, you move back. The first person to answer all ten questions, wins!
Step 1: Design and create
Step 2: Play and have fun!
Boardgame 4: Royal Dash
Roll the dice, whoever gets the highest number starts. If you roll a 6, you get a riddle card. If you answer it right, move forwards, if you answer it wrong, move back. The princess is at the top of the tower. As you move along the board, you gather bricks. When you reach the end, you stack the bricks and climb up to save the princess in the tower!
