Client Position: Prone on the table
Axis: Palpate and place at the lateral aspect of the greater trochanter
Goniometer Stationary arm: Parallel to the midline of trunk
Goniometer Moveable arm: Parallel to the lateral aspect of femur
Instruct Client: "Raise your leg off the table toward the ceiling."
Client lifts leg up off of table, keeping knee straight. , Stable arm stays with midline of trunk, moveable arm stays along midline of femur.
Norm: 0-30°
Assess AROM and then PROM
Client Position: Supine on table, hip and knee extension: 0°
Axis: Palpate and place at the lateral aspect of the greater trochanter
Goniometer Stationary arm: Parallel to the midline of the trunk
Goniometer Moveable arm: Parallel to the lateral aspect of the femur
Instruct Client: "Bend your hip and knee up towards your chest."
Client bends the hip and knee up off the table as far as they can go. The stable arm stays with the midline of the trunk, the moveable arm stays along the midline of the femur.
Norm: 0-120°
Assess AROM and then PROM
Client Position: Supine on the table, and the leg not being tested should be in hip abduction with the knee extended.
Axis: Palpate the ASIS and place over the ASIS. The goniometer will be starting in 90° for the start position
Goniometer Stationary arm: Positioned across the pelvis between both ASIS
Goniometer Moveable arm: Parallel to the midline aspect of the femur
Instruct Client: "Bring your leg inward toward your other leg until they are touching."
The practitioner will be standing on the side, not being tested. The client will move their leg inward towards the abducted non-tested leg. Stable arm stays along the pelvis. When reading the goniometer, make sure the numbers are adjusted for starting in 90°
Norm: 30° -0°
Assess AROM and then PROM
Client Position: Supine on table, hip and knee extension: 0°
Axis: Palpate the ASIS and place over the ASIS with the hip in neutral. The goniometer will be starting at 90° for the start position
Goniometer Stationary arm: Positioned across the pelvis between both ASIS
Goniometer Moveable arm: Parallel to the midline of the femur
Instruct Client: "Move your leg and hip out to the side as far as you can go."
The practitioner will be standing on hip side being tested. The client will move their leg aay from their body, make sure leg has room to move on table. Stable arm stays along pelvis. When reading the goniometer, make sure numbers are adjusted for starting in 90°
Norm: 0°-45 °
Assess AROM and then PROM
Client Position: Supine on table or in chair, lower extremities hanging off the edge; hips in neutral ab/adduction and knee flexed at 90°and hip flexed at 90.°
Axis: Palpate the patella, axis over midpoint of the patella.
Goniometer Stationary arm: Positioned perpendicular to the floor
Goniometer Moveable arm: Parallel to the anteiror apsect of the midline of the tibia
Instruct Client: "Move your leg so that you bring your foot out and up towards the ceiling"
The practitioner will be in front/to the side of the client . The client will raise their leg and bring their foot out and up toward the ceiling. Stable arm stays perpendicular to the floor and the moveable arm is along the midline of tibia.
Norm: 0°-45 °
Assess AROM and then PROM
Client Position: Supine on table or in chair, lower extremities hanging off the edge; hips in neutral ab/adduction and knee flexed at 90°and hip flexed at 90.°
Axis: Palpate the patella, axis over midpoint of the patella.
Goniometer Stationary arm: Positioned perpendicular to the floor
Goniometer Moveable arm: Parallel to the anterior aspect of the midline of the tibia
Instruct Client: "Move the sole of your foot towards your other leg"
The practitioner will be in front/to the side of the client . The client will bring their foot in towards their other leg, rotating their hip. Stable arm stays perpendicular to the floor and the moveable arm is along the midline of tibia.
Norm: 0°-45°
