Working together to better understand and support the undergraduate student journey

Throughout 2022, a cross-functional team of NYU employees partnered with IDEO on the Student Experience Design Initiative, an extensive ethnographic-style research initiative with over 400 students. Together we developed a set of NYU design principles, explored insights from co-design sessions with students, and identified areas for improvement and further exploration.

We started with a “design challenge,” i.e., a question to be answered, not a solution to be implemented.
Students have been involved at every step, from identifying the challenge to building out solutions.
A broad range of stakeholders are engaged meaningfully in the research and design process.

We met with 300+ students to better understand and map the moments that matter for the undergraduate student experience.
We crafted a set of 8 guidelines that translate student insights into actionable instructions for design.
We co-designed with students a prototype for a "beacon project"— a tangible expression of what could be, based on student needs.
The research and design principles have been leveraged to inform or support key initiatives across the university.
