In addition to devising ways to make NYU more navigable for students, this project also provided the opportunity to redefine our own internal working relationships. The core project team believes that there are some defining characteristics to shared problem-solving efforts that are essential for these cross-collaborative efforts.
Grounded in a Question
We start with a “design challenge,” i.e., a question to be answered, not a solution to be implemented.
Student-Centered
We push ourselves to design for the student experience, not what works best for us. We involve students at every step, from identifying the challenge to solve, to building out possible solutions.
Co-designed
We ensure that a variety of stakeholders engage meaningfully in the research and design process.
Collaborative in Approach & Accountability
Representatives from across NYU actively participate in the project in cross-functional teams and are accountable for specific activities and workstreams.
Action-Oriented and Iterative
We focus on doing instead of discussion, sharing imperfect ideas early and often in service of learning, and constantly refining our ideas and approach. Failing fast together helps us avoid investing too much time or resources in an idea that wouldn’t work.
These shared commitments will guide our work together as things evolve, and we will continue to test and refine as we go.
